[For this
\nyear\u2019s installment in my annual anti-favorites series, I wanted to complicate
\nthings a bit, considering places from across my life with which I have
\nlove\/hate relationships. I\u2019d love to hear your own complex (or simple!)
\nanti-favorites, whether places or anything else, for the crowd-sourced weekend
\nairing of grievances!]<\/p>\n

Five
\npieces through which I\u2019d chart my evolving, fraught feelings on my hometown.<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Talking
\nPoints Memo<\/a> (2015): I\u2019d certainly written about Charlottesville here on the
\nblog before 2015, but it was with the violent
\narrest of UVa student Martese Johnson<\/a> in that year (also the origin point
\nfor one of my favorite short
\nstories<\/a>) that I really started to lean into public scholarly engagements
\nwith race, community, and Cville, if in a pretty preliminary way at that time. <\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Huffington
\nPost<\/a> (2016): The evolving debate over Charlottesville\u2019s Confederate statues
\nwas a driving force in my continued thoughts, as reflected in this HuffPost
\ncolumn\u2014also the first time I started to more directly link, in my writing at
\nleast, the city\u2019s histories of segregation and racism to those broader
\nquestions of collective memory. <\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Segregated Cville<\/a>
\n(2017): This Activist History Review<\/i> article remains one of my favorite
\npieces of my writing, not just about Cville but on any subject, and I\u2019d ask you
\nto check it out in full if you read any one of the hyperlinked pieces in this
\npost. It brought together those two earlier columns, but also and especially deepened
\nmy thinking about all the American histories and issues that Cville so
\nprofoundly embodies. <\/span><\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Saturday
\nEvening Post<\/a><\/span><\/i> (2019): That\u2019s one of a few Considering History
\ncolumns I\u2019ve written about my hometown, but I\u2019m focusing on it here because it
\nwas the one in which I had the chance to write about the destruction of the
\nVinegar Hill neighborhood, one of the most painful and telling stories from
\nCville and any American community. <\/span><\/p>\n

5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Here
\non the Blog<\/a> (2020): Over the last five years I\u2019ve returned many times in
\nthis space to Cville, with updates on both its unfolding stories and my own
\nevolving thoughts. That\u2019s just one example, and of course since 2020 my perspective
\nhas likewise continued to shift. As I imagine it always will on my fraught,
\nfrustrating, foundational hometown. <\/span><\/p>\n
