This year is effectively a pilot \u2014 it\u2019ll be an opportunity to determine if you like us and our program, and if we like you. If it\u2019s a good fit, there may be more work available in 2026.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Required qualifications: Lead Guide<\/h2>\n<p>To be considered for the Lead Guide role, you must have:<\/p>\n<p>1. Extensive professional experience as a backpacking guide (100+ days) with a proven ability to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Manage groups, junior guides, risks, and incidents;<\/li>\n<li>Teach wilderness skills, including but not limited to off-trail navigation; and,<\/li>\n<li>Lead trips in the American West (good) and\/or Alaska (better).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Extensive personal backpacking experience with a history of:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completing high routes and\/or similar expert-level DIY itineraries;<\/li>\n<li>Using modern backpacking gear and skills; and,<\/li>\n<li>Exploring remote parts of the American West (good) and\/or Alaska (better).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. A fantastic \u201cguide personality\u201d: enthusiastic, patient, empathetic, communicative, personable, inspiring, adaptable, organized, responsible, etc.<\/p>\n<p>4. Sufficient physical fitness to lead groups rated as <a href=\"https:\/\/andrewskurka.com\/guided-trips\/fitness-level-technical-difficulty\/\">4\/High fitness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Required qualifications: Junior Guide<\/h2>\n<p>To be considered for the Junior Guide role, you must also have three of the qualifications describe above:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extensive personal backpacking experience;<\/li>\n<li>A fantastic guide personality; and,<\/li>\n<li>Sufficient physical fitness to lead High-level groups.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For this position, we do not require previous professional guiding experience. But we do prefer it:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Good: Experience as a teacher<\/li>\n<li>Better: Experience as an outdoor guide, instructor, counselor, or educator<\/li>\n<li>Best: Experience as an overnight backpacking guide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bonus qualifications<\/h2>\n<p>Among the applicants who have the required qualifications, we would give extra consideration to those who also have experience with:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Long-distance thru-hiking,<\/li>\n<li>Adult clients,<\/li>\n<li>Early-season backpacking conditions, canyoneering, winter backpacking, and other outdoor disciplines,<\/li>\n<li>Interpretive topics, such as geology, natural and human history, plants and animals, etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Points of comparison<\/h2>\n<p>If you are uncertain whether you meet the qualifications, compare yourself to some of our existing guides.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andrewskurka.com\/guided-trips\/backpacking-guides\/#jeff-wohl\">Jeff Wohl<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/andrewskurka.com\/guided-trips\/backpacking-guides\/#scott\">Scott Christy<\/a> were exemplary Lead Guides candidates when they joined our program \u2014 they were already pros, and they only needed to learn our program.<\/p>\n<p>Before they became guides, <a href=\"https:\/\/andrewskurka.com\/guided-trips\/backpacking-guides\/#Mikaela\">Mikaela Osler<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/andrewskurka.com\/guided-trips\/backpacking-guides\/#witt-wisebram\">Witt Wisebram<\/a> were exemplary Junior Guide candidates.
