The Benin Kingdom ruled for centuries over the Edo people. This area is now part of Nigeria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1897 after Edo soldiers killed an exploratory mission into the Benin Kingdom, the British sent out a punitive expedition with the specific task of punishment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amongst the many indignities suffered by the Edo people, thousands of the Benin Bronzes were looted from the palace as spoils of war. Individual soldiers carried them home and either displayed them or sold them. Others ended up in the British Museum or in other museums around the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"How_were_the_Benin_Bronzes_made\"><strong>How were the Benin Bronzes made?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Benin Bronzes are individually produced metal sculptures. They were (and are) produced using the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lost-wax casting method which means that the mold is destroyed in the casting of the piece. In fact, many of the Benin Bronzes, including the Horseman pictured above, are made of cast brass. Others are made of ivory. One theory as to why these pieces are called Benin Bronzes is that brass is often conflated with new and shiny works, whereas bronze is associated with higher quality metalworking and a dark patina.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Metal\u2019s Origin<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lost wax casting method has been used in West Africa for centuries. The raw materials to cast the bronzes necessary often required long-distance trade within the African continent.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[1]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, In the 16<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century, a strengthening of the Benin Kingdom\u2019s economic ties with Europe, and in particular Portugal, provided a more consistent supply of copper.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[2]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This increased supply of raw materials meant that the Benin Bronzes, at least from that point onwards, were often made metal imported from Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Where_can_I_see_Benin_Bronzes_now\"><b>Where can I see Benin Bronzes now?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, thousands of the best and oldest Benin Bronzes are found in museums and private collections around the world, mostly in the northern hemisphere. \u00a0The British Museum holds a vast collection. . <a href=\"https:\/\/mfas3.s3.amazonaws.com\/MFA_Benin%20press%20release.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston\u2019s Museum of Fine Arts received a significant donation of Benin Bronzes from Robert Owen Lehman in 2012<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Museums exhibiting the Benin Bronzes<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Many museums in the US and Europe have a collection of Benin Bronzes. These include The Met, the MFA Boston, the British Museum, \u00a0the Pitt-Rivers Museum the Mus\u00e9e du Quai Branly\u2013Jacques Chirac, and many others. While 161 institutions have acquired Benin Bronzes, only 9 Nigerian ones hold such items. This is a conveniently distracting question of to whom the items should be returned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Arguments for keeping them in the West<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Those countries and museums who have yet to pledge the return of these artifacts claim they are the \u201cworld\u2019s heritage\u201d rather than simply Nigeria\u2019s, the truth is that the originators of these marvelous works of art are often unable to see the most exquisite examples. This is a true imbalance and one of the lingering side-effects of colonialism. It is also a situation that could be rectified, given the right circumstances and a supportive populace.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a significant amount of gridlock around the repatriation of these items that stem from racism and colonial paternalism. For instance, it\u2019s often suggested that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<em>The Nigerians can\u2019t possibly care for their patrimony as well as we in the \u2018West\u2019 could\u2026<\/em>\u201d Whereas in fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/benin-bronzes-safety-repatriation-columbia-university-conference-1234589408\/\" rel=\"noopener\">a study has shown the bronzes are just as safe in Nigeria as anywhere else<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Returning the Benin Bronzes to Nigeria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonetheless, the restitution of these thousands of items has been a mere trickle in the past. It has appeared as though most institutions agreed, until recently that the statute of limitations on items looted in 1897 had run out. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/30\/arts\/design\/benin-bronzes-germany.html\" rel=\"noopener\">some museums are starting to plan for their return, starting in 2025<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>In conclusion\u2026<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we can agree that the statute of limitations for righting the wrongs of the past never truly runs out, it is time to acknowledge that while we may not have been the perpetrated of the sins wrought upon the Edo people, we can help to repair the damage done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Where_can_I_learn_even_more_about_the_Benin_Bronzes\"><strong>Where can I learn even more about the Benin Bronzes?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s definitely worth researching if you want to learn more about this rich heritage.<\/p>\n<p>There are many articles and books that have been written on the subject of the Benin Bronzes, both delving into their history, speculating and establishing the uses for the various sculptures, and discussing their future.
