13 Ghosts of Multimodality: Critiquing, Rejecting and
\nLearning to Live with Multimodality\u2019s Problems<\/p>\n

William Castle was the director and producer of countless
\nhorror movies, many of which utilized various \u201cgimmicks\u201d–seats wired to
\ndeliver electrical shocks, puppets that appeared from behind the movie screen,
\nprops of all kinds. His film \u201c13 Ghosts\u201d (1960) was no exception: the movie
\nrecounts the efforts of a family to spend the night in a haunted house and the
\naudience was given special glasses to see the ghosts or make them disappear, an
\neffect (\u201cIlliusion-O\u201d) that critics found a distraction and that did not last
\ninto the re-making of the film in 2001. Indeed, many of Castle\u2019s tricks didn\u2019t
\nwork as intended: too much voltage to the seats, puppets that people would
\nthrow their popcorn at, props that ran far afield of the films they were
\nsupposed to support. These were the \u201cghosts\u201d that bedeviled Castle films.
\nWhatever their success or failure, however, Castle could be considered a
\nmultimodal pioneer\u2013constantly trying to reach beyond film to engage other
\nsenses. And like Castle, we are also faced with our multimodal \u201cghosts\u201d–the
\nmedia that distract, that open alternative narratives, that escape us to create
\ntheir own, refractory meanings or that produce their own attendant
\ninequalities. Finally, we face some of the same charges of glib insouciance in
\nadopting media that are often seen as outside of anthropology\u2019s usual purview.
\nHere, the gravity of anthropology itself haunts the work. <\/p>\n

This panel considers all of these ghosts, and not
\nnecessarily to vanquish them. In the spirit of Avery Gordon, ghosts emerge from
\nthe past to demand that we act in the future to address an injustice. These
\nmultimodal ghosts challenge us to confront digital divides, interrogate what we
\nmean by \u201ccollaboration,\u201d and, ultimately, address ethnographic revanchism at
\nthe edges of an aesthetic multimodality. Alternately, as Alfred Russel Wallace
\nbelieved, ghosts are messengers from a utopian future that might stimulate us
\nto lean into the multimodal in order to \u201cburn down\u201d the colonialism of
\nanthropology. Finally, like the hapless Zorba family in \u201c13 Ghosts\u201d who try to
\nlast the night the night in the haunted mansion, we might choose to leave\u2013to
\nreject the multimodal\u2013or stay on, learning to live with meanings, platforms and
\nnarratives that do not always go as planned. Accordingly, this panel seeks to
\ninclude papers in a variety of registers: theoretical, confessional,
\naccusatory, communicating through text or through diverse media. Like Castle\u2019s
\n\u201cIllusion-O\u201d glasses, we shift perspectives to see the ghosts or render them
\ninvisible; this is both the promise of the multimodal and its inherent
\nweakness. From one perspective, the multimodal helps us to understand and intervene
\nin an increasingly unequal world; from another, power retreats behind a
\nre-deployment of the auteur for a digital age.<\/p>\n
