Platy Fish Overview<\/h2>\n

Platy fish is the common name that refers to three separate species: Xiphophorus maculatus<\/em> (Southern Platy or Common Platy), Xiphophorus variatus (<\/em>Variable Platy), and Xiphophorus xiphidium (<\/em>Swordtail Platy). <\/strong>The name <\/strong>Xiphophorus<\/em> comes from the Greek work \u2018xiphos\u2019 meaning sword, hence the swordlike tail you sometimes see on platys.<\/p>\n

They are very common in the aquarium hobby and have been intentionally bred to mix colors and fin shapes. The Southern Platy and the Variable Platy are the most common species. The Variable Platy is named after the multitude of color options. The Swordtail Platy is more of a rare specimen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They are hardy fish so they\u2019re considered a beginner fish. However, they have a short life span, averaging about three years in normal circumstances.<\/p>\n

Platy Fish Appearance<\/h2>\n

Platies are small fish. Full grown, they typically max out at about 3 inches.<\/p>\n

In terms of their body shape, their nose comes to a pronounced point. They have large eyes and a relatively thick body. Their bodies taper gracefully towards their tails. Overall, their fins are small, with a beautiful fan-shaped tail.<\/p>\n

They come in a massive variety of colors and patterns, including yellow, orange, red, white, and blue. Overall, they\u2019re cute fish \u2013 very friendly, very approachable. They remind us of Labrador Retrievers of the fish world.<\/p>\n

Varieties of Platy Fish<\/h3>\n
