I\u2019ve covered this phenomenon before in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/gtm-tips\/chrome-samesite-warnings-google-tag-manager\/\">SameSite article<\/a>, as well as in my guide for setting up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/cookieless-tracking-cross-site-iframes\/\">cookieless tracking for iframes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.google.com\/\">Google Analytics<\/a> updated its libraries (<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/app-web\/tag-guide\">App+Web<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/gtagjs\">gtag.js<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/analyticsjs\">analytics.js<\/a>) with a new <strong>setting<\/strong>: <code>cookieFlags<\/code> (analytics.js) or <code>cookie_flags<\/code> (App+Web and gtag.js).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>NOTE 25 March 2020<\/strong>: The feature isn\u2019t yet officially released, and there might be additional features added to the functionality before it is officially documented. Google Analytics, for example, creates a cookie named <code>_ga<\/code> with a pseudo-random Client ID generated for the current browser instance.<\/p>\n<p>If you create a cookie with nothing but the name and value, it have the following features by default:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It will be a <strong>session<\/strong> cookie, meaning it has no expiration. When the browser closes, all session cookies are cleared (though <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.chromium.org\/p\/chromium\/issues\/detail?id=130291\">not always<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>It will be written on the current domain the browser is on.<\/li>\n<li>It will be written on the current path the browser is on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On top of these, in the latest version of the Google Chrome browser, the cookie will also be treated as having the <code>SameSite=Lax<\/code> flag. This means the cookie <strong>will not<\/strong> work when accessed in a third-party context.<\/p>\n<p>When setting a cookie, you can configure these fields to your liking. The directives available for configuring are:<\/p>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Directive<\/th>\n<th>Description<\/th>\n<th>Example value<\/th>\n<th>Google Analytics field<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><code>Expires<\/code><\/td>\n<td>Maximum lifetime of the cookie, specified with a date string.<\/td>\n<td><code>Expires=Tue, 24 Mar 2020 13:37:28 GMT<\/code><\/td>\n<td><code>cookieExpires<\/code> and <code>cookie_expires<\/code><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><code>Max-Age<\/code><\/td>\n<td>Maximum lifetime of the cookie, specified in seconds.<\/td>\n<td><code>Max-Age=7200<\/code><\/td>\n<td>&#8211;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><code>Domain<\/code><\/td>\n<td>The domain on which the cookie is written.<\/td>\n<td><code>Domain=simoahava.com<\/code><\/td>\n<td><code>cookieDomain<\/code> and <code>cookie_domain<\/code><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><code>Path<\/code><\/td>\n<td>The path on which the cookie is written.<\/td>\n<td><code>Path=\/<\/code><\/td>\n<td>&#8211;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><code>Secure<\/code><\/td>\n<td>The cookie is only sent to the server if the request is made over HTTPS.<\/td>\n<td><code>Secure<\/code><\/td>\n<td>&#8211;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><code>HttpOnly<\/code><\/td>\n<td>Prevents the cookie from being accessed with JavaScript.<\/td>\n<td><code>HttpOnly<\/code><\/td>\n<td>&#8211;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><code>SameSite<\/code><\/td>\n<td>Specifies the context in which the cookie can be accessed.<\/td>\n<td><code>SameSite=Strict<\/code><\/td>\n<td>&#8211;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>As you can see, there are <em>some<\/em> fields that you can already set with pre-existing Google Analytics settings, but you\u2019re still missing the option of configuring <em>all<\/em> aspects of the cookie.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-new-cookieflags-field\">The new cookieFlags field<\/h2>\n<p>The new <code>cookieFlags<\/code> field allows you to set <em>any<\/em> cookie directive when the Google Analytics cookie is created.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Naturally, this excludes <code>HttpOnly<\/code> as that is only available for cookies set in the HTTP response.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The value of this setting is a semi-colon separated list of lowercase cookie directives and their respective values. For example, this is a possible value of <code>cookieFlags<\/code>:<\/p>\n<p><code>max-age=7200;domain=simoahava.com;path=\/;secure;samesite=none<\/code><\/p>\n<p>If set as the value of <code>cookieFlags<\/code>, it would create the Google Analytics cookie with an expiration of two hours (7200 seconds), set it on the <code>simoahava.com<\/code> domain and on the root path, and make sure it\u2019s only sent with HTTPS requests <em>and<\/em> make it available as a third-party cookie.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, <code>cookieFlags<\/code> <strong>takes precedence<\/strong> if some of the flags have already been set with e.g. <code>cookieExpires<\/code> and <code>cookieDomain<\/code>. If there\u2019s a conflict, <code>cookieFlags<\/code> wins.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"set-the-field-in-analyticsjs\">Set the field in analytics.js<\/h3>\n<p>To set the field with Universal Analytics where you\u2019re using inline script to collect data (i.e. not Google Tag Manager), you\u2019d set it like this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\">ga(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'create'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'UA-XXXXX-Y'<\/span>, {\n  cookieFlags: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'max-age=7200;secure;samesite=none'<\/span>\n});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>The correct place for the <code>cookieFlags<\/code> parameter is in the tracker creation method, embedded in an object you pass as a parameter to the <code>ga()<\/code> method.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"set-the-field-in-gtagjs\">Set the field in gtag.js<\/h3>\n<p>You can set the field with an inline gtag.js implementation as well. The name of the field is <code>cookie_flags<\/code> rather than <code>cookieFlags<\/code>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\">gtag(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'config'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'G-N2A3FMNDT5'<\/span>, {\n  cookie_flags: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'max-age=7200;secure;samesite=none'<\/span>\n});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"set-the-field-in-google-tag-manager\">Set the field in Google Tag Manager<\/h3>\n<p>In Google Tag Manager, the main places where you\u2019d modify this field are the Universal Analytics tags and the App+Web Configuration tags.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"universal-analytics-tag\">Universal Analytics tag<\/h4>\n<p>This includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/google-analytics-settings-variable-in-gtm\/\">Google Analytics Settings variable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The name of the field is <code>cookieFlags<\/code> and the value is the string of directives you want to set.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1772 \/ 682;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/03\/cookieflags-universal.jpg\" title=\"cookieFlags - universal analytics\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"682\" width=\"1772\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/03\/cookieflags-universal.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"cookieFlags - universal analytics\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 id=\"appweb-configuration-tag\">App+Web Configuration tag<\/h4>\n<p>The name of the field is <code>cookie_flags<\/code>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1762 \/ 598;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/03\/cookieflags-app-web.jpg\" title=\"cookieFlags - app+web\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"598\" width=\"1762\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/03\/cookieflags-app-web.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"cookieFlags - app+web\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>This is an important update to Google Analytics\u2019 data collection libraries. There are <em>so many<\/em> scenarios where the first-party cookies used by Google Analytics need to be accessed in third-party context.<\/p>\n<p>These scenarios include, for example, embedded booking flows, embedded forms, and login portals.<\/p>\n<p>Without setting the <code>samesite=none;secure<\/code> flags in Google Analytics\u2019 settings, the cookies created by GA would not be available in third-party context, thus messing with your ability to track the same user on the parent site and in the embedded resource.<\/p>\n<p>The other fields are useful as well &#8211; <code>Max-Age<\/code> is so much easier to use than <code>Expires<\/code>, and setting the cookie <code>Secure<\/code> by default is just a good practice.<\/p>\n<p>Let me know in the comments if you have questions about this new setting!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the enforcement of SameSite settings in the latest versions of Google Chrome, it\u2019s become a mad scramble to get cookies working across first-party and third-party contexts.
