The fires were sparked by dry lightning over a week ago and have since burnt through over 45,000 hectares of land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In a recent press conference, State Fire Controller and Commissioner of Fire and Emergency Services,\u00a0Jeremy Smith stated that the last 24 hours in particular have been challenging.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We&#8217;ve had fire spread in the number of the fire grounds, and approximately an additional 20,000 hectares of vegetation has burnt over the last 24 hour&#8217;, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-14\/tasmania-west-coast-bushfires-warnings-friday-live-blog\/104934404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he said<\/a>. &#8216;It also means that the perimeter of the fire, which is probably around 1,200 kilometres long, with the four major fires all has to be fully extinguished to ensure that they&#8217;re out.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_166307\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alert.tas.gov.au\/?view=map&amp;list=warnings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment noopener wp-att-166307\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166307\" class=\"wp-image-166307 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ek5jbm9x6ox.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/14142414\/Screenshot-2025-02-14-at-12.53.55-pm.jpg?lossy=1&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1010\" height=\"760\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-166307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map from TasAlerts<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The two fires of greatest concern to <em>takayna<\/em>\/Tarkine Forest are the Yellowband Plain and Donaldson fires. The ancient forest is considered one of Australia\u2019s most valuable and is home to rare old-growth trees, including what&#8217;s believed to be the last known stand of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-06\/huon-pine-grove-under-threat-by-tasmanian-bushfires\/104901486\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Huon pines<\/a> untouched by historical logging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Stay updated on fire alerts with <a href=\"https:\/\/alert.tas.gov.au\/?view=list&amp;id=9ef6dc5d-6bca-400e-b91e-a183532e519f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TasAlert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The news comes a week after the popular Overland Track was first closed as a separate fire came within 5km of the trail. The fire eventually destroyed infrastructure, including the privately operated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-13\/overland-track-pine-forest-moor-hut-destroyed-tasmanian-bushfire\/104930364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pine Forest Moor hut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, 860m of boardwalk, and an 8m-long bridge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The northern half of the track remains closed until at least Monday 24th of February, 2025.
