It was a print by Bob and Roberta Smith (aka<br \/>\nPatrick Brill).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many years ago, when visiting the Deptford X Festival, in a<br \/>\ndamp railway arch I discovered the artist known as Bob and Roberta Smith. There was something deceptively simple and warm<br \/>\nabout the exhibition and my brain had been fried by a lot of super intense and impenetrable<br \/>\nvideo installations which were in vogue at the time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The \u2018I promise never<br \/>\nto make art again\u2019 exhibition made me smile and then it made me ask questions<br \/>\nincluding the age old chestnut \u2013 what is art? Who gets to make art and who<br \/>\ndecides what is good and bad art? If you are failing as an artist (or writer) to<br \/>\nsell any work, is it worth carrying on or should you just give up?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bob and Roberta Smith says, \u2018Asking questions is what art is<br \/>\nabout.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When I\u2019m working with school groups in art galleries I often<br \/>\nbegin by asking what do they think they need to be a writer.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>After we have considered pencil, paper and ideas,<br \/>\nI share that for me the most important thing is to be \u2018nosey\u2019, curious about<br \/>\nlife and to ask questions. My two favourite questions being \u2018I wonder\u2019 and \u2018What<br \/>\nif.\u2019 If you ask those questions then you can usually find your way to a story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I also encourage \u2018slow looking\u2019 at art; an almost meditative<br \/>\nprocess of paying attention and noticing. We are bombarded by so many images<br \/>\nthat we are in danger of not really taking the time to look around us. The<br \/>\npressure of the number of images, particularly on Smartphones or social media platforms<br \/>\ncan become stressful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The government is starting to consider that art matters and is<br \/>\ncurrently reviewing the curriculum, and the importance of visual literacy is<br \/>\nbeing recognised with such initiatives as The Superpower of Looking (<a href=\"https:\/\/artuk.org\/learn\/the-superpower-of-looking\">ArtUK-superpower-of-looking<\/a>).<br \/>\nThere are studies about the impact of looking at an art work in a gallery on<br \/>\nbrain function (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2024\/oct\/03\/real-art-in-museums-stimulates-brain-much-more-than-reprints-study-finds\">Guardian-real-art-in-museums-stimulates-brain-much-more-than-reprints<\/a>).<br \/>\nThe importance of visual literacy is being discussed (<a href=\"https:\/\/artuk.org\/discover\/stories\/visual-literacy-research-initiative-will-assess-how-looking-at-art-can-impact-young-peoples-future-success?utm_source=Newsletters&amp;utm_campaign=f23ba32efa-WEEKLY_NEWSLETTER_2024_11_26&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_d3a24f9a65-f23ba32efa-106946208&amp;goal=0_d3a24f9a65-f23ba32efa-106946208&amp;mc_cid=f23ba32efa&amp;mc_eid=c55df1df4c\">Visual-literacy-research-initiative<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">ART MATTERS!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 For the first time in my life I splurged and bought something in the Black Friday sale.
