They have become apologists for factory farms by sitting on the board of directors for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/humane-certifications-betray-animals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">humane-washing scheme<\/a>\u00a0GAP.<\/p>\n<p>GAP uses misleading \u201canimal welfare certified\u201d labels to convince consumers that they\u2019re buying the flesh and secretions of animals who were treated better than those on other factory farms, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/humane-labels-are-lying-to-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">marketing buzzwords<\/a>\u00a0mean nothing for animals raised and killed for food.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By supporting GAP, these organizations are allowing animals to be:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Routinely mutilated without any painkillers.<\/li>\n<li>Forcibly manually impregnated.<\/li>\n<li>Kept in factory farm sheds that are virtually indistinguishable from operations that aren\u2019t \u201canimal welfare certified.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Animal-welfare-certified-pig-image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"303\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Animal-welfare-certified-pig-image-602x303.jpg\" alt=\"Animal welfare certified pig image\" class=\"wp-image-1129540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Animal-welfare-certified-pig-image-602x303.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Animal-welfare-certified-pig-image-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Animal-welfare-certified-pig-image-768x386.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Animal-welfare-certified-pig-image-668x336.jpg 668w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Animal-welfare-certified-pig-image.jpg 1336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>GAP\u2019s welfare standards also allow companies to send sensitive, communicative pigs into C02 gas chambers at slaughterhouses, where they convulse and slowly suffocate for up to several minutes.<\/p>\n<figure data-media-credits=\"[{&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;credit_link&quot;:&quot;&quot;}]\" class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-block-image--has-credit\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/chickens-on-factory-farm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"585\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/chickens-on-factory-farm.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1081187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/chickens-on-factory-farm.jpg 585w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/chickens-on-factory-farm-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/chickens-on-factory-farm-150x103.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>GAP is also phasing in the <em>abysmally low standards<\/em>\u00a0of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/blog\/better-chicken-commitment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cBetter Chicken Commitment<\/a>,\u201d a humane-washing sham that allows chickens to continue to suffer mightily in vile, filthy, factory-farm conditions so the meat industry can profit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over 8 billion chickens are killed for their flesh in the U.S. each year. Most of these chickens, called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-food\/factory-farming\/chickens\/chicken-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">broilers<\/a>\u201d by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/every-animal-is-someone\/#:~:text=Our%20%E2%80%9CEvery%20Animal%20Is%20Someone,compassion%20and%20conviction%20are%20critical.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">speciesist<\/a>\u00a0chicken industry, spend their entire lives confined in dirty sheds with tens of thousands of other birds, even when their flesh is labeled \u201cAnimal Welfare Certified\u201d in grocery stores\u00a0like Whole Foods. The intense crowding and confinement by the meat, egg, and dairy industries often lead to disease outbreaks, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/living\/food\/bird-flu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">bird flu<\/a>.
