West Africa is emerging as a must-visit destination for intrepid travellers. Home to over 300 ethnic groups, this vibrant region is one of the most culturally diverse places on the planet, and thanks to growing tourist infrastructure, it\u2019s more accessible than ever.<\/p>\n

From exploring Senegal\u2019s jazz-filled streets to witnessing Vodun ceremonies in Benin, here are five West African countries that should be on your radar.<\/p>\n

1. Find your rhythm in Senegal<\/h2>\n

Ready to move to a rhythm you didn\u2019t know you had? The beats of the balafon, djembe and kora resonate through West Africa, but even more so in Senegal<\/a>. In the UNESCO-listed city of Saint-Louis, jazz melodies and powerful griot storytelling fill the pastel-painted streets, while the capital of Dakar pulses with mbalax, a fusion of African drumming and contemporary influences. Dakar is also known for its thriving art and fashion scene, with galleries, textile markets and murals around every corner.<\/p>\n

While you\u2019re in Dakar, take a short\u00a0ferry ride to Goree Island. Once a\u00a0major slave trading post, it\u2019s now a memorial\u00a0for the millions of lives impacted by the transatlantic slave trade from the 15th to the 19th century.<\/p>\n

Nature lovers are also in for a treat. Hang out with flamingos and crocodiles in Djoudj National Park, float in the bubblegum-pink waters of Lake Retba or unwind on the powdery sands of Cap Skirring \u2013 home to some of West Africa\u2019s most idyllic beaches.<\/p>\n

2. Trace the roots of Voodoo in Benin<\/h2>\n

Journey to\u00a0the birthplace of Vodun<\/a>, a spiritual tradition deeply connected to nature and ancestors. Vodun travelled with enslaved Africans across the Atlantic, evolving into practices like Voodoo, Hoodoo and Vodou in the Americas.<\/p>\n

In Ouidah, experience the rich traditions of Vodun by attending a Zangbeto ceremony. The Zangbeto, meaning \u2018night watchman\u2019 in the Gun language of the Ogu people, are supernatural guardians who protect the community from evil forces. The captivating performance \u2013 featuring cone-shaped costumes made of raffia palm leaves and jumping and whirling to hypnotic drumming \u2013 is believed to invoke ancestral spirits and symbolises the connection between the material and spiritual worlds.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re not learning\u00a0about the Zangbeto, paddle the quiet waterways of the Adjara Black River in a pirogue (dugout canoe) or visit the Fon village of Possotome on Lake Aheme to see traditional mud homes and meet a Vodun potter.<\/p>\n

3. Hike through coffee farms in Togo<\/h2>\n

Keen on a hike that offers lush scenery and cultural encounters? Head to Kpalime in\u00a0Togo<\/a>.\u00a0Hidden among coffee and cocoa plantations, the trail to Mount Agou (986 m\/3235 ft), Togo\u2019s tallest peak, weaves between backyards, waterfalls, forests and terraced villages where you can glimpse into local life. You\u2019re unlikely to encounter many hikers, but keep your eyes peeled for monkeys and hundreds of butterfly species.<\/p>\n

For more cultural immersion, head to the Grand Marche in lively Lome.\u00a0Wander seemingly endless stalls selling everything from souvenirs to spices and snacks, have a go at haggling and learn about the famous \u2018Nana Benz\u2019 businesswomen. Taking their name from the Mercedes-Benzes they rode around in, these legendary ladies built an empire trading Dutch wax cloth, creating an inspirational legacy for women in West Africa and beyond.<\/p>\n

4. Meet fantasy coffin makers in Ghana<\/h2>\n

Imagine being buried in a giant book, a shoe or a chilli pepper. It sounds a bit out there, but it\u2019s something you may ponder after visiting\u00a0fantasy coffin makers<\/a>\u00a0in Accra. Many cultures in\u00a0Ghana<\/a>, including the Ga, believe\u00a0an impressive sendoff with an elaborate coffin can elevate\u00a0one\u2019s status in the afterlife.\u00a0The coffins usually represent\u00a0the deceased\u2019s profession, passion or talents, serving as a meaningful reminder of their legacy to loved ones.<\/p>\n

Beyond Accra, Ghana has plenty of nature-based\u00a0adventures. In the Volta Region, hike forested hills, swim beneath the tumbling waters of Wli Falls and try your hand at\u00a0traditional drumming. For wildlife enthusiasts, head to Kakum National Park to teeter across a canopy bridge surrounded by hundreds of birds.<\/p>\n
