There is a way. Take this example:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\">gtag(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'event'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#a50\">'my_custom_event'<\/span>, {\n  event_category: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'some category'<\/span>,\n  event_label: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'some label'<\/span>,\n  value: <span style=\"color:#099\">15.00<\/span>\n});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here <code>my_custom_event<\/code> is the \u201cevent action\u201d in Google Analytics parlance. Coincidentally, it also becomes the <strong>event<\/strong> pushed into <code>dataLayer<\/code>. You can verify this in Preview mode, as it will show up in the list of events:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1906 \/ 644;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/04\/tag-preview-mode.jpg\" title=\"gtag preview mode\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"644\" width=\"1906\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/04\/tag-preview-mode.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"gtag preview mode\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This means that you can create a Custom Event trigger with this \u201cevent action\u201d to fire your tags when the gtag.js call happens.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1408 \/ 766;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/04\/custom-event-trigger.jpg\" title=\"Custom Event trigger\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"766\" width=\"1408\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/04\/custom-event-trigger.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Custom Event trigger\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As you can see, the parameters are also shown in Preview mode. The catch is that the parameters are embedded in a top-level key named <code>eventModel<\/code>. Thus, if you wanted to create Data Layer variables for them, you\u2019d need to map them to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><code>event_category<\/code> becomes <code>eventModel.event_category<\/code><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><code>event_label<\/code> becomes <code>eventModel.event_label<\/code><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><code>value<\/code> becomes <code>eventModel.value<\/code><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1342 \/ 908;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/04\/eventmodel-data-layer-variable.jpg\" title=\"eventModel with Data Layer variables\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"908\" width=\"1342\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/04\/eventmodel-data-layer-variable.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"eventModel with Data Layer variables\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This method works with <em>all<\/em> events sent to gtag.js &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/gtagjs\/ecommerce\">Ecommerce<\/a> as well, for example.<\/p>\n<p>It won\u2019t work with the <code>config<\/code> call, so the initial call to gtag.js, where you initialize the integration to Universal Analytics, for example, cannot be picked up by Google Tag Manager.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Short and sweet this time. This should prove useful for you if you want to access your site\u2019s gtag.js integration with Google Tag Manager.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that rare to have both gtag.js and Google Tag Manager running on the site these days. There\u2019s a convergence of sorts going on as well, with gtag.js\u2019 tech stack merging with Google Tag Manager under the hood as well. In fact, if you look at the gtag.js library and compare it with the gtm.js library, you can see a lot of similarities. And then take a look at the Google Optimize library, and the App+Web library.
