{"id":89155,"date":"2025-02-15T06:20:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-15T06:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/analytics\/snowplow-analytics-settings-custom-variable-template\/"},"modified":"2025-02-15T06:20:00","modified_gmt":"2025-02-15T06:20:00","slug":"snowplow-analytics-settings-custom-variable-template","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=89155","title":{"rendered":"Snowplow Analytics Settings &#8211; Custom Variable Template"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1846 \/ 1564;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/05\/snowplow-analytics-settings.jpg\" title=\"Snowplow Analytics Settings\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1564\" width=\"1846\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/05\/snowplow-analytics-settings.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Snowplow Analytics Settings\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <strong>Snowplow Analytics Settings<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/custom-templates-guide-for-google-tag-manager\/\">custom variable template<\/a> is an <strong>official<\/strong> variable template for <a href=\"https:\/\/tagmanager.google.com\/\">Google Tag Manager\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/tagmanager.google.com\/gallery\/\">community template gallery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"description\">Description<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Snowplow Analytics Settings<\/strong> custom variable template is meant to be used with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/custom-templates\/snowplow-analytics\/\">Snowplow Analytics tag template<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With this template, you can compile a <strong>tracker configuration object<\/strong>, which you can then load into your Snowplow Analytics tags to avoid the need to manually enter the same tracker settings across all your tags.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"install-the-template\">Install the template<\/h2>\n<p>To <strong>install the template<\/strong>, browse to <strong>Templates<\/strong> in\tthe Google Tag Manager user interface.<\/p>\n<p>Under <strong>Variable Templates<\/strong>, click <strong>Search Gallery<\/strong>, and type <code>snowplow<\/code> into the gallery overlay search bar.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1820 \/ 576;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/05\/variable-template-gallery.jpg\" title=\"variable template gallery\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"576\" width=\"1820\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/05\/variable-template-gallery.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"variable template gallery\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Click the <strong>Snowplow Analytics Settings<\/strong> template name, and then click <strong>Add to Workspace<\/strong> in the next screen. Review the permissions and click <strong>Add<\/strong> to finalize the import.<\/p>\n<p>After importing\tthe template, you can follow the normal\tprocess\tof creating a <strong>new variable<\/strong> in Google Tag Manager, and the <strong>Snowplow Analytics Settings<\/strong> template will be listed among the <strong>Custom<\/strong> variable types you can choose from.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"instructions\">Instructions<\/h2>\n<p>The fields in the template provide a UI for setting the tracker configuration parameters. You are thus encouraged to follow <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/snowplow\/snowplow\/wiki\/1-General-parameters-for-the-Javascript-tracker\">this link<\/a> to understand what each individual field does.<\/p>\n<p>The main <strong>caveat<\/strong> is that <strong>automatic cross-domain tracking<\/strong> using the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/snowplow\/snowplow\/wiki\/1-General-parameters-for-the-Javascript-tracker#2219-configuring-cross-domain-tracking\"><code>crossDomainLinker<\/code> setting<\/a> does not currently work. This is because the sandboxed JavaScript of Google Tag Manager\u2019s custom templates does not allow for processing of HTML elements.<\/p>\n<p>There is a feature request submitted to Snowplow where linker could be configured with CSS selector strings instead, but until this materializes, cross-domain linking will need to be done manually with a Custom HTML tag:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-html\" data-lang=\"html\">script&gt;\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">if<\/span> (<span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.snowplow) {\n    <span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.snowplow(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'crossDomainLinker'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(linkElement) {\n      <span style=\"color:#00a\">return<\/span> !<span style=\"color:#099\">\/mydomain\\.com|javascript:|mailto:|tel:\/<\/span>.test(linkElement.href);\n    });\n  }\n<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">script<\/span>&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>The other missing feature is the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/snowplow\/snowplow\/wiki\/1-General-parameters-for-the-Javascript-tracker#24-setting-onload-callbacks\">onload callback<\/a>.
