<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nJANEK SCHAEFER \u2013 LOVE HERTZ<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\nAs a listener, you can ignore the background story of this album and just focus on what this music means to you. If I remember well, Janek Schaefer<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>suggests somewhere in this interview<\/a> (an interesting insight into the man and his motifs in itself) that this is a possible way of listening. The accompanying \u2018featureless\u2019<\/em> film<\/a>, included on DVD with this release, doesn\u2019t tell much either: it shows an endlessly repeating image of \u2018light descending from the cloudcraft above, projecting hope across the waves\u2019<\/em>. <\/p>\nHowever, the album and track titles provide more context about the experience that led to this album: Attraction, Attrition, Separation, Loss, Closure.<\/em> It tells the story of (Schaefer<\/strong>\u2018s <\/em>emotions after) his separation from the \u2018love of his lifetime\u2019 <\/em>after 21 years of being together. He now refers to his former wife as his \u2018wifex\u2019.<\/em>
And yes\u2026 Love Hertz\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cMaking [ this album] helped me process my emotions and memories. I was able to revel in that dark state, yet exclaim how the music felt exactly how I was feeling back then.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nSurprisingly, this is not a \u2018sad\u2019 album at all. (Which m\u00e1y depend on how you feel yourself, of course). As the third part of a trilogy \u2013 preceded by Glitter In My Tears<\/em><\/a> (2017) and \u2026On Reflection<\/a> <\/em>(2022, with William Basinski)<\/em> \u2013 this album is all about \u2018closure\u2019 \u2013 coming to terms with what happened.
Love Hertz<\/em><\/strong> is a drone-based album \u2013 a \u2018power ambient\u2019<\/em> album, as Schaefer <\/em><\/strong>calls it (\u2018but not the \u201cI\u2019LL KILL YOU WITH SOUND\u201d kind\u2019)<\/em>. The tracks are created with a shruti box (an Indian drone harmonium), pipe organs, and a fan-powered reed organ. All heavily processed and with intended distortion of course, as well as featuring the kind of field recordings you may expect from him \u2013 in the first track it sounds like Janek <\/em><\/strong>himself is rummaging around your room, opening all available cupboards to check what\u2019s in them.<\/p>\nThe CD and DVD are for home use, obviously, but being a performance artist, Schaefer<\/em><\/strong> imagined it to be in an installation performance setting: an \u2018endless AV\/HD projection onto a large monolith in a blue room\u2019<\/em>. <\/p>\n
