It rivals the swords from Dover and from Sutton Hoo,\u201d<\/i> <\/strong>said Duncan Sayer, the lead archaeologist on the excavation and professor of archaeology at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclan.ac.uk\/\">University of Central Lancashire<\/a>. Sayer is no stranger to significant discoveries\u2014he\u2019s referencing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/visit\/suffolk\/sutton-hoo\/royal-burial-ground-at-sutton-hoo\">famous burial mound in Suffolk<\/a> and in Dover, long been celebrated as among the most important archaeological sites in England.<\/p>\n<p>So why does this sword matter so much? For starters, it sheds light on a society that left behind scant written records. History often refers to this period as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Dark-Ages\">Dark Ages<\/a>\u201d due to the lack of contemporary sources.
