Or should it follow the normal rules of creating plurals for words that end in the letter y?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I panicked when I saw \u201cTreasurys\u201d in <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>. Eek! Have I been spelling the word wrong for 20-odd years?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">However, I quickly discovered that opinions are split. When I Googled the terms, there were 2.2 million results for Treasuries vs. only 1.5 million for Treasurys.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>The evidence for Treasuries <\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Here\u2019s the rule that would typically apply. \u201c\u2026if a word ends in a -y that isn\u2019t preceded by a vowel, the plural is formed by omitting the -y and substituting -ies\u2026,\u201d according to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Garners-Modern-American-Usage-Garner\/dp\/0195382757\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1271261737&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garner\u2019s Modern American Usage<\/a><\/em>. Garner makes an exception for proper names ending in y. He agrees that Murphy becomes Murphys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Does Treasury qualify as a proper name? Proper names are usually personal names\u2013such as Murphy\u2013or geographic names\u2013such as Washington, D.C. Following this reasoning, Treasuries makes sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">My friend, financial editor Harriett Magee, found that sources including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Dictionary-Financial-Investment-Barrons-Guides\/dp\/0812025229\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1271262766&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barron\u2019s <em>Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms<\/em><\/a> agreed with Treasuries. Plus, her spell-checker flagged Treasurys as a mistake.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>If you prefer Treasurys\u2026<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\">You\u2019ve got some high-powered company if you stick with Treasurys. When <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: large;\">spells it that way, that legitimizes it in my eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">If you can\u2019t bear not knowing what\u2019s 100% correct, then use the workaround that Harriett Magee suggests. Refer to Treasury bonds, Treasury notes, and so on. It\u2019s bit wordy, but correct.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Follow this advice, no matter what you decide<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\">It\u2019s important to use your words consistently in your corporate communications. Pick one spelling and stick with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Consider creating a corporate style guide that lists preferred spellings.
