This quintessential <b>Barley Wine<\/b> will be finally available on the <b>UK <\/b>market again thanks to an agreement between <b>Italian<\/b> distributor <b>Interbrau<br \/>\nSpa<\/b>, and <b>James Clay &amp; Sons,<\/b> the new official distributor for the <b>United<br \/>\nKingdom. <\/b>This is what the headlines were proclaiming the other week, but the<br \/>\nstory that precedes this announcement, and the <b>50 years<\/b> of history behind this<br \/>\nclassic beer, is even more fascinating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Before going back to where this all started, let\u2019s take a<br \/>\nlook at what was happening at the end of last year. It was back in <b>December<br \/>\n2024<\/b>, that blogger and peripatetic master brewer, <b><u><a href=\"http:\/\/edsbeer.blogspot.com\/2025\/01\/the-session-what-is-best-thing-to.html\">Ed Wray<\/a><\/u><\/b> described on his site,<br \/>\nhow he\u2019d been fortunate to participate in the brewing of the latest batch of<br \/>\n<b>Thomas Hardy\u2019s Ale.<\/b> Widely regarded as one of the greatest vintage beers ever<br \/>\ncreated, <b>Thomas Hardy\u2019s Ale<\/b> was a legendary beer, with a pedigree going back to<br \/>\n<b>1968. <\/b>For those not old enough to remember, <b>Hardy\u2019s Ale<\/b> was originally brewed,<br \/>\nat the now, sadly closed <b>Eldridge Pope<\/b> brewery, in <b>Dorchester.<\/b> It was a special<br \/>\nand rather strong ale, brewed to celebrate one of<b> Dorset\u2019s <\/b>most famous sons,<br \/>\nthe writer and poet <b>Thomas Hardy. <\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjGEyuf8uNdm-6Q9QRcrBM5IeZ2-QnfWXu3hH-DOs83pdRFxYz3BsKGb-TOgMKzv1VzHuohv5yVumqE4SkEpxCiIHpkj6w4vAj8VxVFrYi570bRG9GwEfXi5Ybsmls0MNu-HkYhcPLe_bb0CNK_4u6FtclHLwR3vao77IzQ-dr__BkfLz3kihYXKjcbu0w\/s1241\/Trumpet%20Major.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1241\" data-original-width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjGEyuf8uNdm-6Q9QRcrBM5IeZ2-QnfWXu3hH-DOs83pdRFxYz3BsKGb-TOgMKzv1VzHuohv5yVumqE4SkEpxCiIHpkj6w4vAj8VxVFrYi570bRG9GwEfXi5Ybsmls0MNu-HkYhcPLe_bb0CNK_4u6FtclHLwR3vao77IzQ-dr__BkfLz3kihYXKjcbu0w\/w258-h400\/Trumpet%20Major.jpg\" width=\"258\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The year <b>1968, <\/b>saw the<b> 40th anniversary<\/b> of <b>Hardy\u2019s<\/b> death,<br \/>\nand to commemorate the event, some prominent members of the <b>Dorchester Society<\/b><br \/>\nfounded a cultural association, the <b>Thomas Hardy Society<\/b>, to promote the<br \/>\nauthor\u2019s works. It was clear from <b>Hardy\u2019s <\/b>writing, that he appreciated a decent<br \/>\ndrop of ale, and in his novel <b>The Trumpet Major,<\/b> he describes the local <b>Dorset,<br \/>\nStrong Ale<\/b>, as follows:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><i><span face=\"&quot;Aptos&quot;,sans-serif\" style=\"mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-fareast-theme-font: major-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cIt was of the most beautiful colour that the<br \/>\neye of an artist in beer could desire; full in body, yet brisk as a volcano;<br \/>\npiquant, yet without a twang; luminous as an autumn sunset; free from<br \/>\nstreakiness of taste; but, finally, rather heady. The masses worshipped it, the<br \/>\nminor gentry loved it more than wine\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: small;\">Poetic licence, of course, but amongst the <\/span><b>Thomas<br \/>\nHardy Society\u2019s<\/b> associates was a member of the <b>Pope<\/b> family, who owned the<br \/>\ntown\u2019s <b>Eldridge Pope <\/b>brewery. The group approached <b>Eldridge Pope<\/b> and asked the<br \/>\nbrewery to produce a beer that matched <b>Hardy\u2019s<\/b> description, above. The brewery<br \/>\nwent ahead, and came up with a sumptuous, and dangerously strong, barley-wine,<br \/>\nweighing in at an impressive <b>11.7% abv. <\/b>Amber in colour, sweet, syrupy, and<br \/>\nawash with English hops due to the generous dry hopping, this was a beer designed<br \/>\nwith aging in mind. Therefore, the first batch had a label on the bottle<br \/>\nstating, <i>\u201c<b>This beer will improve if kept lying down at 13\u00b0C, and will last at<br \/>\nleast 25 years. It was then brewed virtually every year until <b>1999 <\/b>when production ceased.<br \/>\n<b>Eldridge Pope<\/b> blamed high production costs, for the beer\u2019s demise, but in the<br \/>\nmeantime, the bottles brewed at <b>Dorchester<\/b> had developed a cult-like status<br \/>\nbecause of the complex nature that the vintages took on over time. It was<br \/>\nclaimed that at ten-plus years, <b>Hardy\u2019s Ale<\/b> starts to resemble a fine<b> Madeira<\/b><br \/>\nor a port rather than a beer, with flavours such as apricot, fig, pipe tobacco,<br \/>\nmolasses, umami, and leather all sharing the stage. <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhrVWJTcb-PUIxbnQMkgidNkuPzrzmoLkxfJGVidPuxYOeGIgyUFCivjVgL8UibdprvVSIJOQM-TLP4-wXSisXRJv_M_UZFONY11ZgTxJzSoXkFVbM_MwdfvpxQyoOI9aAQMjfwqtRWCstwvEnd3W_ejJIzGRLiyrads1dV7u3P26ayauFeEIHrnWQbKZk\/s3747\/Thomas_Hardy's_Ale_001.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"3747\" data-original-width=\"1694\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhrVWJTcb-PUIxbnQMkgidNkuPzrzmoLkxfJGVidPuxYOeGIgyUFCivjVgL8UibdprvVSIJOQM-TLP4-wXSisXRJv_M_UZFONY11ZgTxJzSoXkFVbM_MwdfvpxQyoOI9aAQMjfwqtRWCstwvEnd3W_ejJIzGRLiyrads1dV7u3P26ayauFeEIHrnWQbKZk\/w181-h400\/Thomas_Hardy's_Ale_001.jpg\" width=\"181\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>Hardy\u2019s Ale <\/b>was originally packaged in pint-sized bottles which<br \/>\nsold for a whopping one pound, a substantial sum of money in <b>1968!<\/b> Packaged in<br \/>\nnumbered and vintage-dated bottles and given the predisposition of this <b>Barley<br \/>\nWine<\/b> to age in the cellar for decades, the <b><i>\u201cone off\u201d<\/i><\/b> brew of <b>1968,<\/b> became a<br \/>\nhighly sought-after collector\u2019s item.\u00a0 <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\/>When<br \/>\nproduction began again in <b>1974,<\/b> the beer was packaged in much smaller<br \/>\n<b>\u201cnip\u201d<\/b> bottles, making the product easier to handle, and much more appealing to<br \/>\ncollectors. Beer enthusiasts from all over the <b>UK,<\/b> and indeed the world, began filling<br \/>\ntheir cellars of with bottles, from each vintage, and this tradition continued<br \/>\nright through to <b>1999<\/b> when the <b>Eldridge Pope<\/b> discontinued production, again<br \/>\nblaming rising costs. As an aside, the brewery itself closed in <b>2003<\/b>,<br \/>\napparently due to <b><i>\u201cserious financial difficulties.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At the beginning of the new century, <b>Thomas Hardy\u2019s Ale<\/b><br \/>\nbegan another chapter in its long and illustrious history, when <b>American<br \/>\n<\/b>importer <b>Phoenix Imports<\/b>, arranged for <b>Devon<\/b> based<br \/>\n<b>O\u2019Hanlon\u2019s <\/b>brewery to produce the beer. Unfortunately, history seemingly doomed<br \/>\nto repeat itself, and this third incarnation of <b>Hardy\u2019s<\/b> was short-lived, with<br \/>\nproduction only lasting from <b>2003-2008.<\/b> The cause again was high production<br \/>\ncosts associated with the beer, which requires copious amount of malts and<br \/>\nhops, an ultra-long boil, and a lengthy maturation time. It was around this<br \/>\ntime that I lost touch with what was going on with <b>Thomas Hardy\u2019s Ale<\/b>, although<br \/>\nsome years previously, I\u2019d purchased a bottle of the <b>1991 vintage. <\/b>This was the<br \/>\nyear our son <b>Matthew<\/b> was born, and we decided to lay down the bottle for<br \/>\nkeeping and open it on his <b>21<sup>st<\/sup> birthday.<\/b><i> <\/i><b>Spoiler alert,<br \/>\nthe bottle didn\u2019t age well.<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgrma6XrHhcQhi3QILU8YZIL-RRdnJ3QVpkzA0UEAo75Ew3yrmLIFuU2ZlsiAy1hxelZwmmrQb8RCE5wqCWVpsJFiRk31VMHZVWmrOdr-HjAj_WgKA76gllFpGeaR6NyTVEs1c2N_2laLTYJJ3TkVFy7jZ6j08MpiwgkpPFR0Vi6CZObo_UeEfPDtDW2Vs\/s200\/Thomas%20Hardy%20label.jpeg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"200\" data-original-width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgrma6XrHhcQhi3QILU8YZIL-RRdnJ3QVpkzA0UEAo75Ew3yrmLIFuU2ZlsiAy1hxelZwmmrQb8RCE5wqCWVpsJFiRk31VMHZVWmrOdr-HjAj_WgKA76gllFpGeaR6NyTVEs1c2N_2laLTYJJ3TkVFy7jZ6j08MpiwgkpPFR0Vi6CZObo_UeEfPDtDW2Vs\/w200-h200\/Thomas%20Hardy%20label.jpeg\" width=\"200\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Next on the scene was specialist brewer and <b>Italian<\/b> beer importer<br \/>\n<b><a name=\"_Hlk190118839\">Interbrau,<\/a><\/b> who took ownership of the brand in <b>2012<\/b>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-font-kerning: 0pt; mso-ligatures: none;\">It was <b>Interbrau<\/b> co-owner, <b>Michele Vecchiato<\/b>, who was inspired to rescue<br \/>\nthis great beer, explaining, <b><i>\u201cWe can\u2019t accept that one of the most important<br \/>\nbeers would be lost forever. We discovered Thomas Hardy\u2019s Ale in 2008, which<br \/>\nwas the time when O\u2019Hanlon\u2019s decided to stop the production.\u201d <\/i>Michele<\/b> had been<br \/>\nthinking about importing the beer, only to discover that it wouldn\u2019t be<br \/>\npossible. This was the spark that inspired him to brew T<b>homas Hardy\u2019s Ale <\/b>at<br \/>\n<b>Interbrau.<\/b> A brewing team was assembled in <b>England,<\/b> and three test batches<br \/>\nfollowed until the final result met I<b>nterbrau\u2019s <\/b>expectations, and bottles could<br \/>\nbe shipped off to industry insiders for a sneak peek. T<\/span>he first vintage of<br \/>\n<b>Thomas Hardy\u2019s Ale <\/b>from the new owners, was released in <b>2015<\/b>, and their<br \/>\ncommitment to such an important beer in<b> British brewing history<\/b> has ensured<br \/>\nthat it will be enjoyed well into the <b>21st century<\/b>, and hopefully beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-font-kerning: 0pt; mso-ligatures: none;\">We are now approaching the latest chapter in the<br \/>\nstory of<b> <\/b><\/span><b><a name=\"_Hlk190204198\">Thomas Hardy\u2019s Ale<\/a><\/b>, and over half a<br \/>\ncentury later from its first release, the reborn beer is now being produced at<br \/>\nthe <b>Hepworth\u2019s Brewery<\/b>, in <b>Sussex.<\/b> under the guidance of the iconic brewmaster<br \/>\n<b>Derek Prentice. <\/b>This is where we catch up once more with <b><u><a href=\"https:\/\/edsbeer.blogspot.com\/2024\/12\/thomas-hardy-my-part-in-his-downfall.html\">Ed Wray. <\/a><\/u>Thomas Hardy\u2019s<br \/>\nAle <\/b>is finally available again on the <b>UK<\/b> market, thanks to the collaboration<br \/>\nbetween the <b>Interbrau <\/b>and long-established, beer wholesaler, <b><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesclay.co.uk\/\">James Clay and Sons. <\/a><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEidJHKuDdALLc9qEF9D_Zeyf__t8zM0LHQekqpmTij0rghvlakaBq5yb-Mx0Spq1gUHRduttavqPIxttx_pHTx0mkAS268xqT8QeVASEJccXDcVYwIms73chTSMeAR2FVZy4vO0rCqq3796tFJCN0iVSD7F2z1hFrl-qOHsRgYgcyOWkHUJUAXZXjnBnHs\/s3634\/Fuggs%20Bar%20NYE.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2105\" data-original-width=\"3634\" height=\"231\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEidJHKuDdALLc9qEF9D_Zeyf__t8zM0LHQekqpmTij0rghvlakaBq5yb-Mx0Spq1gUHRduttavqPIxttx_pHTx0mkAS268xqT8QeVASEJccXDcVYwIms73chTSMeAR2FVZy4vO0rCqq3796tFJCN0iVSD7F2z1hFrl-qOHsRgYgcyOWkHUJUAXZXjnBnHs\/w400-h231\/Fuggs%20Bar%20NYE.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/b><\/div>\n<p><b>Thomas Hardy\u2019s Ale vintage 2024<\/b> is now available in numbered<br \/>\nand vintage dated <b>25 cl<\/b> bottles as well as <b>10 litre key-kegs<\/b>, and I managed to catch<br \/>\nsome on draught (key-keg) at <b>Tonbridge Fuggle\u2019s<\/b>, last weekend. The beer was certainly<br \/>\nattracting a lot of interest, although quite sensibly, <b>Fuggle\u2019s<\/b> were only selling<br \/>\nit in half, or third of a pint measures. With an abv of <b>11.3%<\/b>, it was<br \/>\ndefinitely a beer for sipping and savouring, but not surprisingly has already sold<br \/>\nout. I\u2019m pleased then, that <b>56 years<\/b> after it\u2019s first appearance, I was<br \/>\nfinally able to taste and enjoy this legendary beer, and I\u2019m keeping my fingers<br \/>\ncrossed that <b>Fuggle\u2019s<\/b> are able to get their hands on another keg of <b>Thomas<br \/>\nHardy\u2019s Ale,<\/b> before too long.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thomas Hardy\u2019s Ale is back in the UK and arriving on bars and speciality beer shop shelves, near you, from this week.
