It might,<br \/>\nthough, be the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peace-coin.org\/#!\/message\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">last<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">While the cost of<br \/>\neverything seems to be going up these days and people purportedly are \u201cwatching<br \/>\ntheir pennies,\u201d Americans still hate loose change \u2013 which is one reason why so<br \/>\nmany prefer paying by card or crypto to avoid cash altogether.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">In the 1950s, though,<br \/>\ncredit cards remained rare and many sellers refused personal checks. People<br \/>\ntended to pay in cash, so lots of coins jingled in pockets and pocketbooks.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">To legendary public<br \/>\nrelations pioneer Wilma Soss (1900-1986), who hosted the weekly nationally<br \/>\nsyndicated radio show \u201cPocketbook News,\u201d coins meant something, practically and<br \/>\nsymbolically, and could mean more. Informed by her PR career, Soss tried to<br \/>\nadvance the cause of world peace through money.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">We do not mean that Soss<br \/>\nsuggested that governments pay foreign soldiers to desert or defect, as the<br \/>\nU.S. did during the Vietnam War with its<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/reports\/R1172.html\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><span style=\"background: #F8EEFF; color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">Chieu Hoi Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">, or as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilx.com\/2022\/03\/06\/i-didnt-want-fight-ukraine-offers-russian-soldiers-5-million-rubles-pardon\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">Ukraine did<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> at the beginning of the<br \/>\nRussian invasion in February of this year. Rather, Soss wanted to put the word<br \/>\n\u201cPeace\u201d back on U.S. coins, many of which circulated abroad, hoping that the<br \/>\nmessage would truly help in getting people around the world to realize that<br \/>\nAmericans cared deeply about peace too\u2014albeit peace through strength. Convinced<br \/>\nof the importance of the message, she ran a pro bono PR campaign to promote the<br \/>\nidea.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Soss was old enough to<br \/>\nremember (and fondly) how the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moderncoinmart.com\/1922-silver-peace-dollar-bu.html\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">U.S. Mint issued Silver Peace Coins after World War I, minting<br \/>\nthem from 1921 through 1928, and for a brief time in 1934 and 1935<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">.\u00a0 The impetus was a genuine one: to commemorate the end of<br \/>\nthe Great War, the war to end all wars.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Fervent hopes for a<br \/>\nlasting peace were dashed by the Second World War. As the Cold War intensified<br \/>\nin the late 1950s, Soss thought it high time for the U.S. Mint to mint peace<br \/>\nonce again.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Accordingly, in February<br \/>\n1958, Soss urged her radio show listeners to send her postcards if they agreed<br \/>\nwith her that the word peace should be included on U.S. currency. \u201cEveryone<br \/>\nwants American dollars,\u201d she explained, \u201clet\u2019s show everyone Americans want<br \/>\nPeace.\u201d The response from her audience, which then numbered in the hundreds of<br \/>\nthousands, was large and heartfelt.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2015\/07\/06\/margaret-chase-smith-on-10-bill-a-movement-grows\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">Margaret Chase Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">, U.S. Senator from<br \/>\nMaine and the descendant of former treasury secretary Salmon P. Chase, took<br \/>\nnotice. In March, Smith introduced a bill to put peace back on pieces of<br \/>\nAmerica\u2019s metallic money.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">How did Soss pull off<br \/>\nsuch a coup? She had learned from the best of the best, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_Reichenbach\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">Harry<br \/>\nReichenbach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">, one of the fathers of modern PR. She also was<br \/>\na skilled communicator, with a degree from Columbia\u2019s journalism school (Class<br \/>\nof \u201925) and several years of reporting experience before she entered the PR<br \/>\nworld. By the 1950s, she had embraced a new career in shareholder activism, in<br \/>\naddition to financial journalism. As detailed in a biography I coauthored with<br \/>\nBucknell\u2019s Jan Traflet,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fearless-Americas-Forgotten-Investor-Movement\/dp\/1958682306\/\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">Fearless: Wilma Soss and America\u2019s Forgotten<br \/>\nInvestor Movement<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> (All Seasons Press,<br \/>\n2022), Soss was a passionate advocate for enhanced corporate governance<br \/>\npractices, widespread financial literacy, and many other causes, like world<br \/>\npeace.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Impressively, Soss<br \/>\nmanaged to get a peace money bill (the Chase bill) introduced into Congress.<br \/>\nUnsurprisingly, though, it never passed.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">As he left the Oval<br \/>\nOffice in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/president-dwight-d-eisenhowers-farewell-address\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">January 1961<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">, President Dwight D. Eisenhower<br \/>\nexplained that the nation\u2019s leaders had fallen under the sway of a<br \/>\nmilitary-industrial complex geared for war, not peace. Soss eventually realized<br \/>\nthat, calling on her listeners in 1968 to pray for \u201cpeace on earth\u201d as war<br \/>\nraged in southeast Asia despite implementation of the hush-hush Chieu Hoi<br \/>\nProgram of pacification.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Although she believed<br \/>\nthat \u201cworld trade is better than world war,\u201d Soss, like many Americans,<br \/>\nbelieved in peace through strength. So she could not countenance disarmament<br \/>\neven in the late 1960s and early 1970s as the gold dollar gave way to its<br \/>\nflimsy paper simulacrum, the only message of which, she believed, was weakness.<br \/>\nPutting peace back on money no longer made sense to her.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 107%;\">With physical coins already<br \/>\nrelatively rare and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Calibri&quot;,sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/digital-currency-us\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">possibly soon extinct<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 107%;\">, more likely due to the adoption of central<br \/>\nbank digital currencies than the rise of cryptocurrencies like Peace Coin,<br \/>\nAmericans should look for other ways to express their desire for world peace.<br \/>\nMutually beneficial trade, in dollars but also financial investments, goods,<br \/>\nand services, remains the best way to conjoin interests in favor of peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The launch of Peace Coin cryptocurrency was not the first time somebody thought to equate peace with money.
