<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nMICHEL BANABILA \u2013 THE UNREAL REALM<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\nA new album by one of my long-time favorite artists, Michel Banabila<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, is always a welcome surprise. And this one does not disappoint!
Mostly, The Unreal Realm<\/em><\/strong> presents rather contemplative music \u2013 perhaps even dark at some moments. This is especially the case in the compositions that were commissioned for new choreographies by Yin Yue<\/a>: <\/em>three tracks for \u2018Somewhere<\/em>\u2018 (which will be premiered in New York in June this year), and another two for \u2018Timeless Tide\u2019<\/em> (which premiered recently in Columbus, US). The music for these dance performances is hauntingly dynamic. In longer tracks (up to 15 minutes) Banabila <\/em><\/strong>takes his time slowly leading us to intense sound climaxes \u2013 and back again into the quiet.<\/p>\nApart from the music for these choreographies, the album is further completed with four tracks. Two of those were previously released as digital singles: one with Pierre Bastien<\/em> and the other with Dave Liebman<\/em>.
Bogus Dominion<\/em> and Inward Spiral<\/em> are two (aptly named) collaborations with Mete Erker<\/em> and Machinefabriek (Rutger Zuydervelt) <\/em>respectively. <\/em><\/p>\nThe title of the album, The Unreal Realm<\/em><\/strong>, refers to the hypocrisy of Western society. Recent turmoil in the world is a major concern to Banabila<\/em><\/strong>, who recently released an instrumental single with Cengiz Arslanpay<\/em> called \u2018Stop The Genocide! End The Occupation Now<\/em><\/a>\u2018<\/em>. Some of this album may express this concern at its darkest moments. But never too explicitly \u2013 so, ironically, it is a great pleasure to listen to.<\/p>\n
