Hot weather warnings for pets<\/strong><\/h3>\n

  1. Make sure there\u2019s plenty of water available for your furry friends<\/li>\n
  2. Never leave your dog (or any pet) alone in a car \u2013 even with the windows open<\/li>\n
  3. Avoid exercising your dog during the heat of the day. If it\u2019s very warm or if your dog struggles in the heat, avoid taking them for a walk altogether.<\/li>\n
  4. Small pets will also need plenty of shade and may benefit from being brought indoors in the hot weather<\/li>\n
  5. Animals can suffer fatal heatstroke within minutes. Obvious signs of heatstroke include collapse, excessive panting or breathing heavily, and dribbling. If you suspect your animal is suffering, remove them to a cool place, wet their coat and contact a vet immediately. Avoid overcooling \u2013 especially small pets.<\/li>\n

    Protecting dogs and cats hot weather<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    There\u2019s lots of advice you can follow to keep your dog and cat comfortable in warm weather. Importantly, they\u2019ll need access to clean water at all times, ideally in a large bowl filled to the brim. Older animals, particularly cats, are vulnerable to dehydration. And do not forget your dog needs fresh water if you\u2019re at the beach \u2013 drinking seawater is likely to make your dog ill.<\/p>\n

    Pale-coloured dogs and cats are vulnerable to sunburn, particularly on their ears, noses and sparsely haired areas. Sun damage can lead to skin cancer which may require extensive surgery \u2013 even amputation in severe cases.<\/p>\n

    The best prevention is to keep your pet indoors when the sun is strongest, between 11.00am and 3.00pm. Alternatively, cover vulnerable areas, or regularly apply a sunblock product specifically for pets that does not contain zinc oxide or PABA. Seek prompt veterinary advice if your dog or cat\u2019s skin looks sore, crusty or scaly.<\/p>\n
