According to the DOE, the loan will help finance the expansion of a renewable fuels\u2019 facility in Great Falls, Montana, aiming to produce about 315 million gallons of biofuels annually, most of which will be SAF. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the DOE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/lpo\/montana-renewables\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">official website<\/a>, when fully operational, Montana Renewables is set to become a top global producer of SAF, expected to produce about half of all North American SAF and about 12% of all global SAF through 2030. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-1\"\/>\n<p>The loan was first proposed and completed by\u00a0the Biden-Harris administration on January 10, 2024. At the time, the energy department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/lpo\/articles\/doe-announces-167-billion-montana-renewables-significantly-expand-us-sustainable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">announced<\/a> a total loan guarantee of $1.67 billion to Montana Renewables.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, on February 5, 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-02-05\/trump-mulls-revoking-loans-from-400-billion-clean-energy-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported that the Trump administration was looking into legal ways to cancel loans from a $400 billion program aimed at financing clean energy technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The DOE informed Bloomberg via email that these loans are being considered as part of an agency-wide review \u201cto ensure all activities are consistent with President Trump\u2019s executive orders and priorities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-2\"\/>\n<p>The\u00a0new refinery project\u00a0is expected to create, at its peak, 450 construction jobs and up to 40 new permanent operations jobs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Montana Renewables facility has been operational since late 2022 and currently produced approximately 140 million gallons of biofuels per year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US Department of Energy\u2019s (DOE) Loan Programs Office (LPO) has approved a loan guarantee of $1.67 billion for the expansion of a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) refinery in Montana.\u00a0 The decision was approved by US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration on February 11, 2025.
