People perished, personal, commercial, and<br \/>\nmunicipal properties destroyed or otherwise altering the local economies resulted<br \/>\nin billions of dollars in lost revenue and cost reconstruction. Upper<br \/>\nSusquehanna Valley affected by Agnes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"background: yellow; mso-highlight: yellow;\"\/><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In early July, only weeks<br \/>\nafter the 1972 flood, a Native American Indian site was discovered by amateur<br \/>\narchaeologists on the Sheshequin Flats located down river from the Sayre\/Athens<br \/>\narea. The Sheshequin location forms part of a series of sites previously<br \/>\nidentified in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century by river expeditions.\u00a0 Historic documents identify the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmdb.org\/m.asp?m=43523\" target=\"_blank\">Sheshequin Path<\/a> which ran from the Lycoming Valley to<br \/>\nTowanda Creek as an important foot path developed by the tribes of this region<br \/>\nand later utilized by settlers. Historic accounts of the Moravian Mission (1769-1772)<br \/>\nlocated at present-day Ulster, Bradford County recorded evacuation of the<br \/>\nvillage for a few days due to flooding in 1771. The Moravians left the village<br \/>\nin 1772 and led a group of followers west to the Allegheny River. Among them<br \/>\nwere the two sons and a nephew of Teedyuscung, an important Delaware leader and<br \/>\nnegotiator.\u00a0 The rich cultural heritage<br \/>\nof this area was exposed as the result of Agnes\u2019s destruction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-right: -11.65pt;\">Over a three-week period, the<br \/>\narchaeologists uncovered pottery and clay pipe fragments, stone arrow points<br \/>\nand other prehistoric objects of the Late Woodland period (AD. 900 \u2013 AD. 1500).<br \/>\nThe artifacts lay on the surface of the flood scoured area adjacent to the active<br \/>\nchannel of the Susquehanna River. Concurrently, archaeological remains were<br \/>\nalso found by local artifact collectors on Queen Esther\u2019s Flats and on the<br \/>\nbroad floodplain formed by Tioga Point at the juncture of the Chemung River and<br \/>\nNorth Branch Susquehanna River. The<br \/>\ndamage was so severe at the river town of Forty Fort, Luzerne County, that the<br \/>\nearthen dike gave way, destroying a cemetery containing many graves. The stone<br \/>\nmonument erected in memory of the deceased reads:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 8.0pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 19.85pt; margin-top: 0in; tab-stops: 7.5in;\"><i>\u201cOn the afternoon of Friday June 23,<br \/>\n1972, the Susquehanna River swollen by the flood waters of unprecedented height<br \/>\nbroke through the dike at a point 120 yards south of this site. The swirling<br \/>\nwater gouged a four-acre chasm out of the heart of the cemetery displacing<br \/>\napproximately 2500 burials. This park is dedicated by the Forty Fort Cemetery<br \/>\nAssociation to the memory of those whose gravesites vanished in that singular<br \/>\ncatastrophe\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"page-break-after: avoid;\">Wilkes Barre was hit hard by<br \/>\nthe Agnes flood where the river rose above the 42-foot mark &#8211; the impact was<br \/>\ndevastating. The Archaeology Laboratory and the artifact storage areas at Kings<br \/>\nCollege were completely submerged. Water damage to the facility was significant<br \/>\nwith the irreparable loss of artifacts and field\/lab records from Kings<br \/>\nCollege\u2019s early archaeological investigations at the Kennedy (36BR0043) and<br \/>\nFriedenshutten sites in Bradford County. Friedenshutten was founded in 1752 as<br \/>\na Delaware settlement and by 1763, David Zeisberger a Moravian missionary had constructed<br \/>\na church within the village. Leonard Corgan Library<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"page-break-after: avoid;\">The archaeological sites impacted by the Agnes Flood south<br \/>\nof the Wyoming Valley on the floodplain of the North Branch are not well<br \/>\ndocumented beyond the information derived from first &#8211; hand accounts of surface<br \/>\ncollectors. \u00a0Numerous archaeological<br \/>\nsites near Northumberland, Pennsylvania were also inundated. The Central<br \/>\nBuilders site(36NB0117) located a short distance south from Danville,<br \/>\nPennsylvania was one of the sites frequently hunted by artifact collectors.<br \/>\nThere, stone projectile points affiliated with the Early Archaic (9000 BCE)<br \/>\nthrough Late Woodland (AD. 900 \u2013 AD. 1500) period were recovered.
