{"id":84000,"date":"2025-02-12T13:39:14","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T13:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/animal\/uk-university-students-vote-for-plant-based-menus\/"},"modified":"2025-02-12T13:39:14","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T13:39:14","slug":"uk-university-students-vote-for-plant-based-menus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=84000","title":{"rendered":"UK university students vote for plant-based menus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Students at the University of Bristol and Imperial College London in the United Kingdom (UK) voted to support the transition to fully plant-based catering on campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <span id=\"more-16988\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The decision follows years of campaigning for more sustainable food options at both universities.<\/p>\n<p>With this vote, Bristol and Imperial joined universities such as Cambridge and Newcastle  in taking steps toward climate-friendly menus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Students at 13 universities in the UK, Netherlands, and Austria have backed a shift to 100% plant-based food.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plantbaseduniversities.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plant-Based Universities<\/a>\u00a0campaign called the vote \u201ca huge step forward\u201d and urged other universities to follow suit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The movement has gained support from hundreds of scientists and public figures, including environmentalist Chris Packham and entrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theanimalreader.com\/2020\/12\/23\/the-animal-reader-talkshow-dale-vince-about-his-book-manifesto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dale Vince<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-students-want-change\"><strong>Students want change<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Hollie Meyers, a fourth-year medicine student at Imperial College London, celebrated the vote: \u201cWe are overjoyed to see our fellow students join calls for Imperial to take the climate crisis seriously and begin the move toward cheap, nutritious, and delicious plant-based menus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnimal farming and fishing are wrecking the planet and the lives of millions across the globe. Now is the time to take a definitive step towards a plant-based future,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>At the University of Bristol, student support for the initiative has grown. Agnes Sales, a second-year philosophy and theology student, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter last year\u2019s motion failed, it\u2019s amazing to see the shift in\u00a0support. Students are willing to vote for no-nonsense climate solutions and set an example for the rest of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Studies have shown the environmental benefits of a plant-based food system. A\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/animal.law.harvard.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eating-Away-at-Climate-Change-with-Negative-Emissions%E2%80%93%E2%80%93Harwatt-Hayek.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019 Harvard study<\/a>\u00a0identified animal farming as the largest user of land in the UK, stating that better land use could make the country carbon-negative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-support-nbsp-animal-welfare-journalism\"><strong><em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/donorbox.org\/become-a-friend-of-the-animal-reader\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Support<\/a>\u00a0animal welfare journalism<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>The Animal Reader is an independent animal news platform based in the Netherlands.
