<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nRICHARD CHARTIER \u2013 ON LEAVING<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\nOf course, Richard Chartier<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and Pinkcourtesyphone<\/a><\/em><\/strong> are the same person \u2013 but there is a distinct difference in the music released under these names. As Pinkcourtesyphone, Chartier<\/em><\/strong> presents a somewhat \u2018tongue-in-cheek\u2019 side of music, more emotional, with perhaps some slightly \u2018campy\u2019 themes. Or, as Chartier<\/em><\/strong> himself says: \u2018more musical\u2019.<\/em> But Pinkcouresyphone\u2019s<\/em><\/strong> output should be taken as seriously as the work released under his own name \u2013 which is a sound art more minimal, spatial, and abstract perhaps.
With these two (almost simultaneously released) new albums the differences (as well as the similarities) can easily be explored.<\/p>\nOn Leaving<\/em><\/strong> is dedicated to Steve Roden<\/em>, who died in 2023, suffering from Alzheimer: \u201cSteve saw and heard everything between the noise, no matter how faint\u201d.<\/em>
\u201cI worked on the compositions included on this album as Steve gradually slipped away from communication. He was not in my life like he had been before.<\/em> [\u2026] on listening\u2026 on loss\u2026 on leaving\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nWith this background in mind, the five variances<\/em> get a dark touch, but in itself, the music is free of such emotional value. It is also intensely quiet and peaceful. The \u2018implied silence, finely structured and in some cases cyclical\u2019 <\/em>requires listening at low volumes or on headphones.
One question remains, however: \u2018What would Steve hear in the details\u2019? <\/em><\/p>\n
