It is a 13-part scale of increasing intensity. Experiencing wind is strongly subjective \u2013 \u2018<em>one man\u2019s stiff breeze might be another\u2019s soft breeze<\/em>\u2018 \u2013 which is why describing the conditions by sea or land conditions is helpful. For example: Beaufort 0 is described as <em>\u2018sea like a mirror\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018smoke rises vertically\u2019<\/em>. Beaufort 12 (the heaviest storm imaginable) as <em>\u2018the air is filled with foam and spray; sea is completely white with driving spray; visibility very seriously affected\u2019<\/em> and with the much shorter land condition <em>\u2018devastation\u2019<\/em>. This inspired composer <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/christophercerrone.com\/\">Christopher Cerrone<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (1984, New York) to compose <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/christophercerrone.com\/music\/beaufort-scales\/\">Beaufort Scales<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, a composition for (female) choir and electronics, <em>\u2018transforming the steps of the scale into 13 corresponding movements of escalating musical intensity\u2019. <br \/>\u201cAs the work proceeds and the weather becomes more violent, I use different forms of electronic processing\u2014granulation, downsampling, pitch shifting\u2014to distort the voices.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Between the steps, there are also four spoken interludes, with wind-related texts from The Great Gatsby, Moby Dick, The Anthology Of Water, and the King James Bible. At these moments, you can regain your breath somewhat, because \u2013 even if this composition is no longer than 35 minutes \u2013 it gets more and more intense as it progresses. This score was written for the play as performed by <em>Anima Motrix,<\/em> directed by <em>Emma Gustafsso<\/em> and <em>Laurent Hatat.<\/em> <br \/><strong>Antigone<\/strong> cannot easily be summarised so I simply refer to the Wikipedia page for convenience. <strong><em>Pernice<\/em>\u2018s <\/strong>score tells the story in just one hour, in 20 relatively short tracks filled with all kinds of emotions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Laurent Pernice<\/em><\/strong> is no stranger to music: <strong><em>Antigone<\/em><\/strong> is his 20th album! For a previous <em>Anima Matrix<\/em> production <em>(Foucault\u2019s<\/em> <em>Le Corps Utopique)<\/em> he focused on wind instruments from all over the world, but this time it\u2019s strings. <strong><em>Pernice <\/em><\/strong>plays bass, double bass, zither, and harp, but there\u2019s an important role for <em>Violaine Sultan <\/em>\u2013 a teacher at the Marseille Conservatory of Music, on viola. The acoustic performances are subtly altered by <strong><em>Pernice<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2018s <\/em>electronic treatments: <em>\u2018the sound of [Sultan\u2019s] instrument, while sometimes very clear and simple, interpreting melodies of a elegant beauty akin to that of classical music, is often turned on its head, slowed down, overdriven, to create textures conducive to the atmosphere of this or that part of the play\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Obviously the soundtrack score will have extra impact when you have seen the performance, but it definitely speaks for itself too, even without the text of the original play.
