Since all hits are passed through the server-side proxy, the default view for any third-party tool (such as Google Analytics) is that of the server in the Google Cloud rather than the browser and device with which the user was browsing the site.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, by using the Server container as a proxy, you are \u201chiding\u201d the actual user, as all hits seem to come from the virtual machine rather than the user\u2019s browser.<\/p>\n<p>However, the <strong>Universal Analytics<\/strong> tag in the Server container <em>copies<\/em> the user\u2019s IP address and User Agent into the outgoing Measurement Protocol request using the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/protocol\/v1\/parameters#uip\"><code>&amp;uip<\/code><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/protocol\/v1\/parameters#ua\"><code>&amp;ua<\/code><\/a> parameters. In the Universal Analytics tag that fires in the Server container, you need to do the following.<\/p>\n<p>First, check <strong>Enable overriding settings in this tag<\/strong>. This allows you to set individual fields in the tag which override those set by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/server-side-tagging-google-tag-manager\/#clients-and-tags\">Client<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1094 \/ 386;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/enable-overriding-settings.jpg\" title=\"Enable overriding settings\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"386\" width=\"1094\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/enable-overriding-settings.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Enable overriding settings\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Then, expand <strong>Override Fields to Set<\/strong>, and add the following two fields <strong>without any values<\/strong> (leave the value fields empty).<\/p>\n<p><code>user_agent<\/code><br \/><code>ip_override<\/code><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>NOTE! These fields are <strong>not<\/strong> the same as <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/analyticsjs\/field-reference\">analytics.js fields<\/a>. They are fields established in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/server-side-tagging-google-tag-manager\/#event-model\">event model<\/a> used in Server-side tagging. There is still a lack of exhaustive documentation about what fields are available, but digging into Debug mode in the Server container and exploring the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/server-side-tagging-google-tag-manager\/#event-data-tab\">Event Data<\/a> tab will get you a long way.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>By setting the fields empty, you are essentially preventing the tag from setting those fields with values from the incoming request, i.e. the user\u2019s actual browser and device.<\/p>\n<p>This is enough to prevent the override, and you can guarantee the actual user\u2019s IP address and User Agent string are not passed to Google Analytics in any shape or size.<\/p>\n<p>But what about if you want <strong>variable<\/strong> behavior. Prevent the override in some cases, but allow it in others?<\/p>\n<p>Well, while we\u2019re waiting for a <strong>Lookup Table<\/strong> variable type to be added to the Server container, there\u2019s no way to set variable values for these fields based on, for example, the existence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/protocol\/v1\/parameters#aip\"><code>&amp;aip<\/code><\/a> (Anonymize IP) parameter.<\/p>\n<p>So if you wanted to <strong>allow<\/strong> the IP and User Agent transfer <em>except<\/em> when the event data has <code>anonymize_ip<\/code> set to <code>true<\/code> (this is what the <code>&amp;aip<\/code> parameter is turned into in the event object), you\u2019d need <strong>two<\/strong> tags.<\/p>\n<p>One sends the data to Google Analytics without the overrides (i.e. default Universal Analytics tag behavior without any overridden settings), and fires when an <strong>Event Data<\/strong> variable set for the key <code>anonymize_ip<\/code> is <strong>not<\/strong> <code>true<\/code>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1710 \/ 722;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/event-data-anonymize-ip.jpg\" title=\"Event data variable for anonymize_ip\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"722\" width=\"1710\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/event-data-anonymize-ip.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Event data variable for anonymize_ip\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2664 \/ 878;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/trigger-no-anonymize.jpg\" title=\"Trigger for no anonymize_ip\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"878\" width=\"2664\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/trigger-no-anonymize.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Trigger for no anonymize_ip\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The other tag sends the data to Google Analytics following the instructions in this article. It needs to have the <code>ip_override<\/code> and <code>user_agent<\/code> fields set to blank values. The trigger for it is the reverse of the one for the other tag, so you need to check if <code>anonymize_ip<\/code> is actually <code>true<\/code>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2446 \/ 872;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/trigger-anonymize-ip-true.jpg\" title=\"Trigger with anonymize_ip true\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"872\" width=\"2446\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/trigger-anonymize-ip-true.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Trigger with anonymize_ip true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Yes, a Lookup Table variable would make this <em>much<\/em> smoother as you\u2019d need just one tag and one trigger and set the value of <code>ip_override<\/code> and <code>user_agent<\/code> to blank <strong>or<\/strong> default values depending on whether the IP should be anonymized or not.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you find this tip useful.
