{"id":81980,"date":"2025-02-11T13:21:19","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T13:21:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/analytics\/gtmtips-sgtm-fetches-ga4-configurations-automatically\/"},"modified":"2025-02-11T13:21:19","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T13:21:19","slug":"gtmtips-sgtm-fetches-ga4-configurations-automatically","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=81980","title":{"rendered":"#GTMTips: SGTM Fetches GA4 Configurations Automatically"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>One of the most popular use cases for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/server-side-tagging-google-tag-manager\/\">server-side Google Tag Manager<\/a>, often shared on this blog, too, is to <strong>split<\/strong> an incoming stream into <strong>multiple different endpoints<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the demise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/customtask-the-guide\/\"><code>customTask<\/code><\/a> for Universal Analytics (Rest In Peace!), there hasn\u2019t really been a solid, officially supported way of splitting a single GA4 stream into multiple endpoints. This is useful in case you want to create a \u201cglobal rollup\u201d property that combines data from multiple local sites, for example.<\/p>\n<p>With server-side Google Tag Manager, this has been quite easy to achieve. You just need to create multiple GA4 tags in server-side Google Tag Manager, and override the <strong>Measurement ID<\/strong> for each tag.<\/p>\n<p>However, the downside of GA4 is that a significant portion of its processing happens client-side. Property-specific configurations for things like <strong>Key Events<\/strong> are determined client-side. So if you override the Measurement ID server-side, this type of information would not be automatically applied to the tags, so\u00a0you had to use something like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/transformations-server-side-google-tag-manager\/#use-case-1-flag-custom-events-as-conversions-for-ga4\">Transformations<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n<p>Until recently, that is. In the <code>G-12345<\/code> property, <code>simo_conv<\/code> is <strong>not<\/strong> flagged as a Key Event, so it doesn\u2019t get the telltale <code>&amp;_c=1<\/code> parameter in the request:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1780 \/ 474;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2025\/02\/no-c-1.jpg\" title=\"No _c=1 in the request\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"474\" width=\"1780\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2025\/02\/no-c-1.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"No _c=1 in the request\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Pay attention to the <code>dma_cps<\/code> parameter as well. It gets the value <code>syphamo<\/code>, which means that in the property <code>G-12345<\/code>, <a href=\"https:\/\/business.safety.google\/privacy\/google-services\/\">consent sharing has been enabled across Google services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, when I create another GA4 event tag in SGTM only, with the Measurement ID of a GA4 property where <code>simo_conv<\/code> <strong>is<\/strong> marked as a Key Event, here\u2019s what the outgoing request to GA4 looks like:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1762 \/ 496;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2025\/02\/yes-c-1.jpg\" title=\"conversion event\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"496\" width=\"1762\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2025\/02\/yes-c-1.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"conversion event\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As you can see, magically the <code>_c=1<\/code> parameter appears in the outgoing request, even though I don\u2019t have a Transformation or a tag setting that adds it. Similarly, the value of <code>dma_cps<\/code> is now <code>-<\/code>, reflecting the fact that on this property, <strong>no<\/strong> Google services are allowed to share consent state.<\/p>\n<p>This is certainly a relief when orchestrating Google Analytics 4 data stream splitting in server-side Google Tag Manager.<\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t tested this extensively enough to give you a comprehensive list of all the possible configuration flags applied to the outgoing requests. Features such as <strike><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/12844695?hl=en\">\u201cCreate or modify events\u201d<\/a> and <\/strike><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/10327750?hl=en\">\u201cIdentify unwanted referrals\u201d<\/a> are most likely still client-side only.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/justusbluemer\/\">Justus Bl\u00fcmer<\/a> was kind enough to test this, and he found that event creation and modification <strong>do<\/strong> get applied to the outgoing streams as well.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Let me know in the comments if you have additional questions or if you\u2019ve found other configuration settings that are also automatically applied!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most popular use cases for server-side Google Tag Manager, often shared on this blog, too, is to split an incoming stream into multiple different endpoints.
