{"id":81507,"date":"2025-02-11T08:00:08","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T08:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/american-history\/the-battle-of-new-orleans\/"},"modified":"2025-02-11T08:00:08","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T08:00:08","slug":"the-battle-of-new-orleans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=81507","title":{"rendered":"The Battle of New Orleans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"post-body-7879577328780183484\" itemprop=\"description articleBody\">\n<p>[Last<br \/>\nmonth I got to return to <a href=\"https:\/\/americanstudier.blogspot.com\/2012\/02\/february-21-2012-big-easy-and-friends.html\">my<br \/>\nfavorite American city<\/a> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mla.org\/Events\/2025-MLA-Convention\">2025 MLA Convention<\/a>.<br \/>\nSo for this year\u2019s Valentine\u2019s Day series I\u2019ll be offering some love letters to<br \/>\nwhat makes New Orleans so unique, leading up to a special tribute post this<br \/>\nweekend!]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On three striking sides to one of America\u2019s most<br \/>\ninsignificant victories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The first thing that stands out about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyewitnesstohistory.com\/battleofneworleans.htm\">January 1815<br \/>\nBattle of New Orleans<\/a> is that it was entirely unnecessary. Not in the \u201cWar:<br \/>\nwhat is it good for?\u201d sense, but quite literally unnecessary: the War of 1812<br \/>\nhad been ended by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourdocuments.gov\/doc.php?flash=true&amp;doc=20\">the Treaty of<br \/>\nGhent in December 1814<\/a>, but the various signatories were still in the<br \/>\nprocess of ratifying the treaty and word had not reached the British troops who<br \/>\nwere trying to take the city and with it the rest of the Louisiana Purchase<br \/>\nterritory. So the attack continued, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americaslibrary.gov\/jb\/nation\/jb_nation_jackson_1.html\">the<br \/>\nAmerican troops led by Major General Andrew Jackson fought back<\/a>, and the<br \/>\nU.S. won its clearest military victory of the war after that conflict had<br \/>\nofficially ceased.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If the victory was thus officially meaningless, however, the<br \/>\ncomposition of those American forces was far more significant. I\u2019ve written<br \/>\nelsewhere in this space about the uniquely <a href=\"http:\/\/americanstudier.blogspot.com\/2012\/02\/february-21-2012-big-easy-and-friends.html\">multicultural,<br \/>\n-national, and \u2013lingual identify of New Orleans<\/a>, and the army fighting to<br \/>\nprotect the city reflected that identity very fully: the relatively small force<br \/>\n(it numbered around 8000, noticeably fewer than the British forces) included<br \/>\nFrench Creole troops from New Orleans (some commanded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/jela\/index.htm\">the former pirate Jean Lafitte<\/a>),<br \/>\nboth free African American residents of the city (<a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/19\/the-free-men-of-color-go-to-war\/\">colloquially<br \/>\nknown as fmcs, \u201cfree men of color\u201d<\/a>) and slaves who had been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duboislc.net\/read\/BlacksNewOrleansBattle.html\">freed<br \/>\nspecifically to aid in the battle<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.choctawschool.com\/home-side-menu\/news\/choctaw-students-live-out-history-at-site-of-battle-of-new-orleans.aspx\">Choctaw<br \/>\nNative Americans<\/a>, among other communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Moreover, one particular such community is even more<br \/>\nstriking and unremembered in our national narratives. Since the mid-18<sup>th<\/sup><br \/>\ncentury, a group of Filipino immigrants had settled in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filam.si.edu\/curriculum\/u3-part-01b.html\">a Louisiana town<br \/>\nknown as Manila Village<\/a>, comprising what seems likely to be the oldest (and<br \/>\ncertainly the most enduring) Asian American community. Men from the village <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csuchico.edu\/ncpaso\/filipino.htm\">joined Lafitte\u2019s forces for<br \/>\nthe battle<\/a>, helping to create the truly multicultural fighting unit known<br \/>\nas the \u201cBatarians.\u201d It\u2019s difficult for me to overstate how much would change in<br \/>\nour understanding of American history and community if we acknowledged at all,<br \/>\nmuch less engaged at length with, this fact: that in one of our earliest<br \/>\nmilitary efforts, our forces included French Creole and Filipino Americans,<br \/>\nfighting side by side to defend the city and nation that were and remain their<br \/>\nhome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Next love<br \/>\nletter tomorrow,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Ben<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">PS.
