As soon as it turned 1st September, I was all ready to curl up with a book and a blanket. I had a look through my TBR and picked out some autumnal books – and I thought I’d share them with you too!

The Haunting of Aveline Jones by Phil Hickes

This spooky middle grade mystery sounds perfect for Halloween. Aveline Jones loves reading ghost stories, so a dreary half-term becomes much more exciting when she discovers a spooky old book. Not only are the stories spine-tingling, but it once belonged to Primrose Penberthy, who vanished mysteriously, never to be seen again. Intrigued, Aveline decides to investigate Primrose’s disappearance. Now someone… or something, is stirring. And it is looking for Aveline.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë

I haven’t read a classic in years, so maybe it’s time to settle down in en empty Elizabethan mansion? When a mysterious and beautiful young widow becomes the new tenant at Wildfell Hall, rumours immediately begin to swirl around her. Almost against his will, Gilbert Markham is drawn to the elusive and singular Helen Graham, but even as he falls in love, he finds himself divided from Helen by dark secrets and painful memories from her past life.

Dread Nation by Justina Ireland

I used to love zombie novels, and October is the perfect time to read them. Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville—derailing the War Between the States and changing America forever. In this new nation, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Reeducation Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead.

Pine by Francine Toon

This chilling gothic thriller is a beautifully autumnal book to curl up with. Lauren and her father Niall live alone in the Highlands, in a small village surrounded by pine forest. When a woman stumbles out onto the road one Halloween night, Niall drives her back to their house in his pickup. In the morning, she’s gone.

Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis

I rarely watch horror films these days (too scary!), even though I loved them as a child. but I’d like to give more horror stories a shot. Harrow Lake is a can’t-put-down, creepy thriller about the daughter of a horror film director who’s not afraid of anything–until she gets to Harrow Lake.

Eight Detectives by Alex Pavesi

This autumn, I’d love to curl up with some cosy crime, and Eight Detectives is high up on the list. All murder mysteries follow a simple set of rules. Grant McAllister, an author of crime fiction and professor of mathematics, once sat down and worked them all out. Now he’s living a life of seclusion on a quiet Mediterranean island – until Julia Hart, a sharp, ambitious editor, knocks on his door. Julia realises she’s unwittingly entered a battle of wits where there can only be one winner. But Grant will soon realise that he underestimates her at his peril…

The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker by Lauren James

Lauren James’ latest novel sounds like the perfect Halloween read! When Harriet Stoker dies after falling from a balcony in a long-abandoned building, she discovers a group of ghosts, each with a special power. Felix, Kasper, Rima and Leah welcome Harriet into their world, eager to make friends with the new arrival after decades alone. Yet Harriet is more interested in unleashing her own power, even if it means destroying everyone around her. But when all of eternity is at stake, the afterlife can be a dangerous place to make an enemy.

Hollowpox by Jessica Townsend

I’ll be treating myself to the third book in the Nevermoor series as soon as it’s out in October! I’m re-reading the first two books in preparation. With Nevermoor in a state of fear, the city Morrigan loves becomes the most perilous place in the world. Morrigan must try to find a cure for the Hollowpox, but it will put her – and everyone in Nevermoor – in more danger than she could have imagined.
