{"id":80075,"date":"2025-02-10T15:25:31","date_gmt":"2025-02-10T15:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/aerospace\/how-booms-xb-1-went-supersonic-without-the-noise\/"},"modified":"2025-02-10T15:25:31","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T15:25:31","slug":"how-booms-xb-1-went-supersonic-without-the-noise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=80075","title":{"rendered":"How Boom\u2019s XB-1 went supersonic without the noise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Hot on the heels of its milestone supersonic flight with its demonstrator aircraft, XB-1, Boom Supersonic has another surprise up its sleeve.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerotime.aero\/articles\/boom-supersonics-xb-1-goes-supersonic-for-the-first-time\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\">demonstration flight on January 28, 2025<\/a>, the XB-1 broke the sound barrier three times, but not one of those occasions caused an audible sonic boom. \u201cThis confirms what we\u2019ve long believed,\u201d says Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom. \u201cSupersonic travel can be affordable, sustainable, and friendly to those onboard and on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, Boom Supersonic has shared more details on the technology behind its quiet supersonic achievement, which it calls \u2018Boomless Cruise.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-1\"\/>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-boomless-cruise\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Boomless Cruise?<\/h2>\n<p>According to the company, Boomless Cruise is based on a phenomenon known as Mach cutoff. Boom Supersonic placed microphones along the aircraft\u2019s flight path, which confirmed that, on every transition, no sonic boom reached the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of Mach cutoff have been explored in some detail by several companies, including NASA which published a paper on the topic as long ago as 2016. Ongoing, several projects aim to deliver supersonic speed without the noise, including the Lockheed Martin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerotime.aero\/tag\/x-59-quesst\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" hoped that as technologies are proven to minimize or even remove the disruption of the sonic boom on the ground, regulators will be more inclined to alter the rules about airspace use and allow new supersonic transports to accelerate to the speed of sound sooner.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerotime.aero\/articles\/nasa-powers-x-59-experimental-supersonic-aircraft-for-the-first-time\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\">Quesst<\/a> is due to begin flight testing in 2025.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"cnvs-block-posts cnvs-block-posts-1739199501779 \/>\n\t<\/aside>\n<h2 id=\"cutting-travel-time-with-boomless-cruise\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cutting travel time with Boomless Cruise<\/h2>\n<p>Boom Supersonic is clear that it wants the Overture, its full-size passenger plane, to be able to go supersonic over land. It says that, if it were allowed to, it would cut transcontinental US flight times by up to 90 minutes. International routes with overland segments would also benefit.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-3\"\/>\n<p>Current regulations mean Overture would only be allowed to operate at Mach 0.94 over land, which is still 20% faster than any subsonic jet.
