In addition to this, we\u2019ll take a look at <strong>one of the most requested features in the history of Google Tag Manager<\/strong>, which we <em>finally<\/em> have access to: <strong>bulk actions<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1982 \/ 986;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/bulk-actions.jpg\" title=\"Bulk actions\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"986\" width=\"1982\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/bulk-actions.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Bulk actions\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Both are relatively small updates compared to what\u2019s been coming into Google Tag Manager over the past year or so, but that doesn\u2019t diminish their importance one bit.<\/p>\n<p>                <span class=\"simmer\"><br \/>\n  <span class=\"close\">X<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n    <span class=\"fa fa-md fa-bell\"\/><br \/>\n    <strong>The Simmer Newsletter<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Subscribe to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/newsletter\/\">Simmer newsletter<\/a> to get the latest news and content from Simo Ahava into your email inbox!\n  <\/p>\n<p>  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"new-bulk-actions\">NEW: Bulk actions<\/h2>\n<p>One of the pain points of the Google Tag Manager UI has been the lack of bulk actions. If you wanted to delete multiple tags, you had to open each tag separately and then click to delete them.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1176 \/ 596;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/painful-delete.jpg\" title=\"Painful delete\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"596\" width=\"1176\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/painful-delete.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Painful delete\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>With bulk actions, this process has improved quite a bit. Take a look:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1950 \/ 940;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/bulk-delete.jpg\" title=\"Bulk delete\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"940\" width=\"1950\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/bulk-delete.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Bulk delete\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Bulk actions are available for <strong>tags<\/strong>, <strong>triggers<\/strong>, <strong>variables<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/server-side-tagging-google-tag-manager\/#clients-and-tags\"><strong>clients<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/guide-zones-google-tag-manager-360\/\"><strong>zones<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/custom-templates-guide-for-google-tag-manager\/\"><strong>templates<\/strong><\/a>. The actions you can do depend on where you are in the UI.<\/p>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Asset<\/th>\n<th>Bulk actions available<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Tags<\/td>\n<td>Pause\/unpause, Move to Folder, Delete<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Triggers<\/td>\n<td>Move to Folder, Delete<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Variables<\/td>\n<td>Move to Folder, Delete<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Clients<\/td>\n<td>Move to Folder, Delete<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Zones<\/td>\n<td>Delete<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Templates<\/td>\n<td>Delete<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>If you try to delete an item that has <strong>references<\/strong>, such as a variable that is referenced from a tag, you will see a warning:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1686 \/ 568;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/09\/delete-failed.jpg\" title=\"Delete failed due to references\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"568\" width=\"1686\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/09\/delete-failed.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Delete failed due to references\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>It takes a few clicks, but to proceed you basically have to remove all references to the item before retrying the deletion. Easiest way is to open the item itself (by e.g. clicking its name in the overlay), and then clicking through the links in the <strong>References to this <type\/><\/strong> section. Remove the links, save everything, and then retry deletion.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1942 \/ 468;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/09\/delete-references.jpg\" title=\"Delete references\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"468\" width=\"1942\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/09\/delete-references.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Delete references\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Yes, the workflow could be a bit smoother.<\/p>\n<p>Also, I would love to see the <strong>Abandon Changes<\/strong> option as a bulk action, allowing you to roll back changes in bulk, especially in the <strong>Overview<\/strong> screen of GTM (where no bulk actions are currently available).<\/p>\n<p>All in all, a <em>very<\/em> welcome addition to Google Tag Manager\u2019s user interface.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"new-advanced-search\">NEW: Advanced search<\/h2>\n<p>Until now, the \u201csearch\u201d functionality in GTM has been limited to searching by item name and\/or type and filtering tables by the available columns, like this:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1990 \/ 344;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/table-filter.jpg\" title=\"Table filter\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"344\" width=\"1990\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/table-filter.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Table filter\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Well, we finally have a proper <strong>search<\/strong> feature, which digs into the actual <strong>settings<\/strong> and <strong>fields<\/strong> in the items as well, rather than just the metadata.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1308 \/ 522;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/customtask.jpg\" title=\"customTask\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"522\" width=\"1308\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/customtask.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"customTask\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>For example, in the image above I\u2019ve searched all references to <code>customTask<\/code> within the container. I get four results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><code>GAS - Local settings<\/code> &#8211; a Google Analytics Settings variable that has a set field named <code>customTask<\/code>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><code>JS - customTask - Local settings<\/code> &#8211; a Custom JavaScript variable that has the term in its name.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><code>UA - Page View<\/code> &#8211; a tag where a field named <code>customTask<\/code> is set.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><code>UA - Page View - SGTM<\/code> &#8211; a tag where a field name <code>customTask<\/code> is set.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, not only does the search look at the metadata (name, type), it also drills into the actual fields and settings the user has configured!<\/p>\n<p>The cool thing is that it also indexes Custom HTML tags and Custom JavaScript variables based on the <strong>JavaScript<\/strong> code. So searching for <code>console<\/code> returns this result:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1316 \/ 292;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/javascript-search.jpg\" title=\"JavaScript search\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"292\" width=\"1316\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/08\/javascript-search.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"JavaScript search\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>That particular Custom HTML tag utilizes the <code>console.log()<\/code> method.<\/p>\n<p>With <strong>templates<\/strong>, the search can also drill down to template name and description, as well as any field names in the template.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Nothing pleases me more than to see such a huge and popular tool like Google Tag Manager get these small, incremental improvements that directly address pain points and pet peeves of the community.<\/p>\n<p>It must be difficult to prioritize these smaller updates, especially since there\u2019s a pull to work on the larger and more impactful stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to use the <strong>Send Feedback<\/strong> feature in the Google Tag Manager user interface (you can find it in the <strong>overflow menu<\/strong> in the top right corner of the page) if you have feature requests.
