This<br \/>\nweek, we would like to turn back to happier subjects and have a look at some of<br \/>\nthe beautiful ceramic vessels from a site discovered in the city of<br \/>\nPhiladelphia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;\">In the 1970s, construction of portions of I-95 and urban<br \/>\nredevelopment projects occurred in the oldest sections of the city near the<br \/>\nwaterfront, prompting archaeological investigations in the areas that would be<br \/>\naffected by demolition and construction activities. Several new historic<br \/>\narchaeological sites were discovered as a result of these investigations,<br \/>\nincluding the New Market site, 36PH0015. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;\">In the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century, the public market,<br \/>\nconsisting of a row of covered shed stalls, ran along the middle of Second<br \/>\nStreet between Pine and South streets. The area surrounding the market was<br \/>\nmarked by the homes of the wealthy and influential. Thousands of artifacts<br \/>\nrecovered from excavations in this area yielded information on the diet,<br \/>\nlifestyle, and economic status of the people who once lived and worked<br \/>\nthere.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;\">Some of these artifacts went on display in<br \/>\nPhiladelphia as part of the collections of the Atwater Kent Museum; however,<br \/>\nafter a time the collection was put into storage in the city. While in storage,<br \/>\nthe boxes of artifacts were damaged by water and vandalism and many objects ended<br \/>\nup being dumped from their original boxes and bags, losing their context or<br \/>\nconnection to the original site. A popular type of ceramic that was introduced to Europe in the 16<\/span><sup style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;, serif;\">th<\/sup><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/>\ncentury was porcelain from China. English attempts to reproduce Chinese<br \/>\nporcelain in the early to mid-1700s were unsuccessful but resulted in new types<br \/>\nof ceramics, including tin-glazed earthenware and salt-glazed stoneware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;\">Many types of ceramics were recovered from Site<br \/>\n36PH0015 including lovely, delicate tea and table wares made of salt-glazed<br \/>\nstoneware. Redware has been<br \/>\nmade for centuries and continues to be produced to this day. Although the first<br \/>\nredware would have been brought to Philadelphia from England and Europe, local<br \/>\npotteries were soon established. Clay sources were discovered within the city<br \/>\nitself that were used for manufacture of bricks and for making redware pottery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;\">These large redware serving plates, or chargers, are typically<br \/>\nhighly decorated. Popular<br \/>\ndesigns included using metallic oxides to make \u2018clouded\u2019 and \u2018tortoiseshell\u2019<br \/>\ncolor palettes and fruit and vegetable shapes such as the melon tureen and<br \/>\ncauliflower-shaped teacup.
