I have corrected obvious spelling errors though. I will add new notes in parenthesis, labeled \u201cANB\u00a0 note.\u201d\u00a0 \ud83d\ude05 I won\u2019t count these as part of the \u201cBack to the Vaults\u201d series as I have not rewatched them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013&gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4hLYmgN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buy <em>Blue Gender<\/em> DVD Collection on Amazon.com<\/a>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Community Anime Review of <em>Blue Gender<\/em><br \/><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>(ANB note: This series was originally reviewed on 10-June-2003.)<\/p>\n<p>As I write this review (2003), I initially gave it a \u201cBuy\u201d rating despite knowing that there are many things in this which will make people not wish to purchase or even watch this. Then I saw it a second time and discovered that I had no interest in seeing this again. The moral of the story is so EVIL that seeing it again really annoyed me. (Thus I dropped my rating to \u201cRent\u201d.) But I digress\u2026<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>Starship Troopers<\/em> Movie Comparison<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/anime.astronerdboy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Blue-Gender-Poster.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-slider wp-image-48626 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/anime.astronerdboy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Blue-Gender-Poster-229x320.jpg\" alt=\"Blue Gender\" width=\"229\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anime.astronerdboy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Blue-Gender-Poster-229x320.jpg 229w, https:\/\/anime.astronerdboy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Blue-Gender-Poster-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/anime.astronerdboy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Blue-Gender-Poster-430x600.jpg 430w, https:\/\/anime.astronerdboy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Blue-Gender-Poster-107x150.jpg 107w, https:\/\/anime.astronerdboy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Blue-Gender-Poster-768x1072.jpg 768w, https:\/\/anime.astronerdboy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Blue-Gender-Poster-143x200.jpg 143w, https:\/\/anime.astronerdboy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Blue-Gender-Poster-590x824.jpg 590w, https:\/\/anime.astronerdboy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Blue-Gender-Poster.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/><\/a>First, this is a very graphically violent and gory title, so much so that I am stunned Cartoon Network even attempted to play it. Secondly, there are several instances of strong sexual content and one episode with mild hentai levels of sexual content. If you saw the live action movie <strong><i>Starship Troopers<\/i><\/strong>, you will get some idea of the levels of violence and sexual content. I think <strong><i>Blue Gender<\/i><\/strong> is a little higher on the scale for both accounts, but if you were OK with <strong><i>Starship Troopers<\/i><\/strong>, you should be OK with this.<\/p>\n<p>Comparing <strong><i>Blue Gender<\/i><\/strong> to <strong><i>Starship Troopers<\/i><\/strong> is a good one. On the surface, <strong><i>Blue Gender<\/i><\/strong> is very much like <strong><i>Starship Troopers<\/i><\/strong> with a touch of <i>Aliens<\/i> thrown in for good measure. However, <strong><i>Blue Gender<\/i><\/strong> goes well beyond that. First there are the characters. When we meet Yuji, he\u2019s just been <strong><i>accidentally<\/i><\/strong> awakened from cryo-sleep to the nightmare that is now Earth. For several episodes, he is scared out of his mind and that\u2019s very understandable. Watching his character develop and grow is very enjoyable and despite his hideous sideburns, I really liked him.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the female lead, Marlene. She\u2019s part of the team that is tasked with recovering \u201csleepers\u201d like Yuji. She starts off as cold and heartless, only wanting to get the precious \u201csample\u201d (Yuji) to the space station known as 2nd Earth. Like Yuji, her character grows too. Yuji is forced to fight for his life and become something more while Marlene discovers her humanity.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Supporting Cast<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The supporting cast are very good and mostly memorable. There\u2019s a large supporting cast as one might expect with all of the death and destruction that goes on. Still, all serve a useful purpose in carrying the story. And the story is very good too, though the \u201cmoral of the story\u201d (technology is EVIL) sucked (IMO). I couldn\u2019t wait to pop in the next DVD to find out what would happen next. While there\u2019s TONS of action, it is the learning of how and why Earth is the way it is that puts <strong><i>Blue Gender<\/i><\/strong> over the top.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Problems I Experienced With the Series<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Problems \u2014 first, I didn\u2019t like all of the graphic sexual content. I was more tolerant of the violence and gore, but it can be bad at times. Second, the series got a tad slow for a few episodes after episode 12, but that is to be understandable. After going 100-mph through the first 11, going 55 doesn\u2019t feel right. \ud83d\ude01 It is a minor complaint though.<\/p>\n<p>Third, I hated the conclusion of this anime. Apparently, the author\u2019s thesis is that technology and those who pursue it are the root of all evil and must be destroyed. Bah! I did agree with the author\u2019s point on executives who are so blinded by their goals\/ambitions that they can\u2019t see beyond the end of their noses. I guess I\u2019ve worked for too many big companies in my life!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>FUNimation DVD Release<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A word on the DVD. As usual, FUNimation does a great job with the subtitles! The characters in <strong><i>Blue Gender<\/i><\/strong> don\u2019t use honorifics very much, but when they do, FUNimation has them in the subtitles! Plus, they are pretty spot-on with their translations and don\u2019t just do a script re-write like \u201cother\u201d American anime distributors do.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Bottom line:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>(This series is) riviting, exciting, gory, violent, sexual, and preachy at the end. Good, but not for everyone. Not worth a 2nd viewing though as far as I was concerned.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"display: inline;\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tYou can skip to the end and leave a response.
