For years, GTM users had been struggling with a somewhat crippled workflow of item-by-item management.<\/p>\n<p>This release is even more impressive with the most recent update to it: <strong>bulk actions with TRIGGERS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2124 \/ 870;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/trigger-bulk-actions.jpg\" title=\"trigger-bulk-actions.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"870\" width=\"2124\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/trigger-bulk-actions.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"trigger-bulk-actions.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>You can now select multiple <strong>tags<\/strong> and attach one or more triggers (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/gtm-tips\/block-your-tags-with-trigger-exceptions\/\">exceptions<\/a>) to them. Check the box next to all the tags you want to select for updating triggers with and click the funky trigger icon in the table header.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2468 \/ 1124;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/select-tags.jpg\" title=\"Select tags for trigger actions\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1124\" width=\"2468\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/select-tags.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Select tags for trigger actions\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>An overlay opens. If your screen is wide enough, you\u2019ll be able to see the items you selected, but there\u2019s also a visual reminder of how many tags\u2019 triggers you are about to edit.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1274 \/ 952;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/editing-triggers-overlay.jpg\" title=\"Editing triggers overlay\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"952\" width=\"1274\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/editing-triggers-overlay.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Editing triggers overlay\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the overlay, you\u2019ll see <strong>all<\/strong> the triggers and exceptions that exist in the selected tags. The icons at the end of each row reveal a lot about the state of the bulk action:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1012 \/ 566;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/icon-options-triggers.jpg\" title=\"Icon options for trigger actions\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"566\" width=\"1012\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/icon-options-triggers.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Icon options for trigger actions\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A <strong>dark grey box with a minus symbol<\/strong> means that the trigger or exception was found in one or more tags <em>but not all of them<\/em>. If you click the checkbox, it will turn into an empty box. If you click it then again, it will turn into the blue checkmark box.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>blue checkmark box<\/strong> means that the trigger or exception will be applied to <strong>all the selected tags<\/strong>. If the box already had a blue checkmark when the overlay first opened, it means that the trigger or exception was <em>already<\/em> attached to all the selected tags. Clicking the box will turn it into an empty box.<\/p>\n<p>An <strong>empty box<\/strong> means that the trigger or exception will be <strong>removed<\/strong> from <strong>all the selected tags<\/strong>. This is the default setting for a trigger or exception that was added via the bulk action overlay. If you click an empty box, it will turn into a blue checkmark box.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, when you click the checkboxes next to a trigger or exception, you will toggle between <strong>add to all selected tags<\/strong> or <strong>remove from all selected tags<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1852 \/ 860;\" class=\"figure \">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/remove-add-selected-tags.jpg\" title=\"Selections in the overlay.\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"860\" width=\"1852\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/remove-add-selected-tags.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Selections in the overlay.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <span class=\"caption\">Selections in the overlay.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1956 \/ 1252;\" class=\"figure \">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/select-result.jpg\" title=\"Result of saving selections.\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1252\" width=\"1956\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/select-result.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Result of saving selections.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <span class=\"caption\">Result of saving selections.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>When you are ready, click the <strong>Save<\/strong> button in the top right corner of the overlay.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"trigger-selection-and-creation-flows\">Trigger selection and creation flows<\/h2>\n<p>In the bulk trigger action overlay, if you click the <strong>blue plus symbol<\/strong> in the corner of either the triggers list or the exceptions list, you\u2019ll enter the familiar flow of trigger or exception selection.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1762 \/ 674;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/trigger-selection-flow.jpg\" title=\"Trigger selection flow\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"674\" width=\"1762\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/trigger-selection-flow.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Trigger selection flow\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>You can even progress deeper down the rabbit hole by clicking a similar blue plus symbol in the <strong>trigger selection<\/strong> overlay to enter the <strong>trigger creation<\/strong> flow.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1770 \/ 580;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/trigger-creation-flow.jpg\" title=\"Trigger creation flow\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"580\" width=\"1770\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/trigger-creation-flow.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Trigger creation flow\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In other words, you can manipulate the entire trigger and exception setup for the selected tags &#8211; all the way from creating the necessary triggers and\/or exceptions to adding them to the tags.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Having the ability to bulk edit triggers and exceptions will be a time-saver for many.<\/p>\n<p>Managing an ever-growing container, especially one with heaps of technical debt, is easily deprioritized when the admin has to decide between refactoring and adding new stuff in.<\/p>\n<p>With bulk actions, refactoring and improving the consistency of a container has become a lot easier to do. Combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/partial-container-export-google-tag-manager\/\">partial exports<\/a> and a powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-manager\/api\/v2\/devguide\">RESTful API<\/a>, your tools for managing complex multi-container setups are in pretty good shape.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s still a lot that can be added to bulk actions (roll changes back, rename items, edit individual fields\u2026) &#8211; I hope we\u2019ll keep on seeing nice, incremental updates like this in the future.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think is still missing from bulk actions?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The release of bulk actions in the Google Tag Manager user interface was very welcome.
