Recent additions to the
\ncollections of the Section of Archaeology<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Artifact collections from development projects required to
\nundertake the Section 106 process continue to be submitted to the State Museum
\nof Pennsylvania\u2019s Section of Archaeology for curation. The Archaeological
\nServices program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania recently delivered
\nartifact collections to the State Museum of PA, some dating to as far back as
\nthe 1980s.<\/p>\n

Avid readers of TWIPA may have observed that many of our
\nposts dealing with cultural resource management (CRM) projects are the product
\nof PennDoT construction activities. This week, we turn our attention to another
\nstate agency that has conducted archaeological investigations prior to some of
\nits own proposed development. <\/p>\n

For many Pennsylvanians, summertime is synonymous with on-the-water
\nrecreation, be it fishing or floating, from innertubes to speedboats, and
\nensuring safe access to the water is critical to making the most of this
\nimportant resource. To that end, in the early 1990s the Pennsylvania Fish and
\nBoat Commission (PFBC) proposed expanding parking at three of its boat launches
\nalong the Juniata River in Juniata County and one farther west in Huntingdon
\nCounty.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The PFBC (like all state agencies) is, under the StateHistory Code<\/a>, obligated to identify and evaluate cultural resources that
\nmay be impacted by their construction activities. In 1994 the PFBC employed
\nIndiana University of Pennsylvania\u2019s Archaeological Services Program to conduct
\nPhase I archaeological surveys at each of the areas under consideration for
\nexpanded parking. <\/p>\n

In short, two of the four access sites, the Mifflintown
\nAccess and the Thompsontown Access were identified as having intact archaeological
\ndeposits that were recommended to undergo Phase II evaluation should the parking
\nexpansion projects proceed. <\/p>\n

The Phase I survey Mifflintown Access site (36JU0099)
\nspecifically, involved the excavation of two 1x1m units. Chert, sandstone and metarhyolite<\/a>
\ndebitage as well as a contracting stem projectile point of metarhyolite were
\nrecovered from excavation unit A-1 before groundwater forced it to be abandoned
\nat approximately 140 cm below ground surface.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Excavation unit A-2 produced additional debitage in modest
\nquantities, but the most impressive find would be this unfinished stone axe
\npictured below. The report authors determined the projectile point and chipped stone
\naxe to be consistent with the Late Archaic through Middle Woodland time
\nperiods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The addition of this large specimen to the curated artifacts
\nat the State Museum is especially fortuitous in that it was received after the
\ndesign and printing of this year\u2019s Archaeology Month poster
\n\u201cThe Mighty Axe\u201d\u00a0 <\/a>. TWIPA has also
\ngone in depth on the axe as an artifact type, and those posts can be found here<\/a>,

In comparing project maps with available Google satellite
\nimages, it appears that the PFBC has forgone, or at least has postponed,
\nambitions to expand the parking lots at the Mifflintown and Thompsontown boat
\nlaunches. New and potentially important cultural resources were discovered
\nbecause of this survey work, and the sites continue to remain undeveloped for
\nfuture investigations.<\/p>\n
