They come in the form of standalone programs or customised services or extensions in a web browser or operating system. <\/p>\n<p>Ad-blocker<br \/>\nsoftware targets adverts such as auto-playing videos, banner ads\/web banners,<br \/>\nbillboards, full screen ads, pop-ups, pop-unders and sticky ads. And they\u2019re<br \/>\nused by vast numbers of web users. Figures from 2018 show that 12.2 million people used an ad blocker on a<br \/>\nmonthly basis in the UK, representing 22% of internet users, compared with<br \/>\n28.7% in France, 32% in Germany and 25.2% in the US.<\/p>\n<h2>How do ad blockers work?<\/h2>\n<p>The software<br \/>\nuses filtering rules to block or hide contents on a web page. While a webpage<br \/>\nis loading, the ad blocker looks at the site\u2019s scripts and compares them with a<br \/>\nlist of sites and scripts it was built to block. If it finds any, it blocks<br \/>\nthem. <\/p>\n<p>Some are capable of differentiating between acceptable and non-acceptable ads, these are then placed on a \u2018whitelist\u2019 and shown to ad blocking users who allow Acceptable ads. However, many don\u2019t distinguish between acceptable and annoying\/intrusive ads \u2013 all adverts get penalised equally. When users decide to block the advertising on the sites they visit, they also prevent all the data being gathered by content providers \u2013  ad blockers often have the function of shutting out web analytics . <\/p>\n<h2>What is the impact of ad blockers on web analytics?<\/h2>\n<p>When ad blockers are<br \/>\ninstalled, between 8% and\u00a025%\u00a0of\u00a0traffic\u00a0data<br \/>\ncan\u00a0be\u00a0lost\u00a0depending\u00a0on the web analytics tool<br \/>\nused\u00a0and the type of site\u00a0being\u00a0measured. In practical terms,<br \/>\nthis involves the loss of site visit data and quantitative metrics such as<br \/>\nvisit duration, pageviews, conversions and bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p>Certain ad blockers actively focus on user privacy and include built-in features to block analytics tools. However, the majority of ad blocking tools <strong>don\u2019t<\/strong> block data collection by default and simply have the feature available as an option should the user want to activate it. On the other hand, mobile ad blockers <strong><em>do<\/em> <\/strong>block web analytics by default. Once installed, the\u00a0ad\u00a0blockers on\u00a0mobile\u00a0applications will\u00a0automatically prevent\u00a0communication with domains they consider to be ad related. Unlike websites,\u00a0the large majority of\u00a0mobile ad\u00a0blockers\u00a0block web\u00a0analytics\u00a0tools by default.\u00a0Although apps developed natively will not have their measurement tools and ads blocked, most of them will. <\/p>\n<p>Most web browsers include built-in features dedicated to ad blocking and privacy, some with their blocking activated by default. Google Chrome\u2019s ad-blocking features are labelled as a way to shift the control back to publishers and improve user experience (UX). However, many are saying it will \u201ckill off most ad-blocker extensions\u201d and by implication, consolidate the tech giant\u2019s power over the type of ads it chooses to promote.  <\/p>\n<h2>What are the solutions to ad blockers?<\/h2>\n<p>The best way to see if an ad blocker is being used is by setting up AT Internet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.atinternet-solutions.com\/product\/adblock-detector\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Adblock detector<\/a>. Exclusively for AT Internet customers, the plugin helps you detect the visits to your website that are using adblockers and that are potentially blocking AT Internet requests \u2013 with a basic implementation you can measure the use of adblockers and assess their impact on your data collection. <\/p>\n<p>When implementing your digital analytics solution, certain alternative methods exist to work with ad blockers, notably (renaming your JavaScript files, electing to not use a CDN or content delivery network, or using neutral names instead of your brand\u2019s name, for example). <\/p>\n<p>AT Internet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atinternet.com\/en\/resources\/resources\/how-to-bypass-adblockers\/\"><em>Custom Domain<br \/>\nData Collection<\/em><\/a> (CDDC)<br \/>\nfeature sends data directly via your own domain name (instead of AT Internet\u2019s<br \/>\ndomain) so that tracking scripts are not disabled, making it possible to<br \/>\nretrieve the majority of traffic lost due to ad blocker usage. Some of our<br \/>\ncustomers have considerable results with CDDC, retrieving as much as 20% of<br \/>\ntheir traffic.<\/p>\n<p>AT Internet also has a new partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atinternet.com\/en\/solution\/partners\/adback\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Adback<\/a>, an analytics and monetisation solution specialising in ad block traffic.
