After the last week\u2019s bad news, regarding the insolvency of
\nBy the Horns<\/a><\/u><\/b> brewery, there\u2019s more than a glimmer of good news on a different front
\nconcerning the re-opening of a recently closed brewery. It\u2019s a story that
\nappears to have come out of nowhere and concerns the re-opening of the former
\nJenning\u2019s Brewery<\/b> at Cockermouth, Cumbria<\/b>, in the heart of the English Lake
\nDistrict. Jennings<\/b> was a much-loved independent brewery, that slowly lost its
\nfreedom and its identity after a series of takeovers and mergers, so let\u2019s
\nfirst take a look at what happened in the run up to the closure of the brewery.

Jennings Brewery <\/b>was founded by John Jennings Sr.<\/b> in 1828<\/b>, in
\nthe Cumbrian<\/b> village of Lorton.<\/b> His son was also involved in running the
\nbrewery and the concern was later passed on to his three grandsons after the
\ndeath of Jennings S<\/b>r. The business prospered and grew in size, eventually outgrowing
\nthe Lorton<\/b> brewery. With an eye to the future, Jennings <\/b>moved to nearby
\nCockermouth<\/b> in 1874,<\/b> where there was more room for expansion. The brewery
\nremains there today, at the foot of Cockermouth Castle<\/b>, surrounded by the Rivers
\nDerwent<\/b> and Cocker.<\/b><\/p>\n

In 1887<\/b>, the brewery went from being a family-owned business
\nto a public limited company, which enthusiastic locals were happy to buy shares
\nin. This ensured that when the last member of the Jennings family died, the
\ncompany kept its local identity; a situation that lasted for the next 100
\nyears.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Jennin<\/b>gs won multiple awards
\nacross the years, with beers such as, Cumberland, Sneck Lifter<\/b> plus Cocker Hoop,
\n<\/b>and in 1999<\/b> the latter brew received the ultimate accolade of Champion Beer of Britain Bitter<\/b>
\nat CAMRA\u2019s Great British Beer festival.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Jennings brewed successfully as an independent company until
\n2005 when the brewery and its pubs were purchased by Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries Ltd.<\/b> In 2007, W&D<\/b> changed their name to Marston’s,<\/b> after acquiring
\nthe Burton-based company because the Marston\u2019s<\/b> name was much better known. \u00a0In
\n2009, Cockermouth <\/b>suffered serious flooding which badly affected the brewery as
\nwell. The floods had an enormous impact on the business, forcing Marston\u2019s<\/b> to
\nimplement flood safety features and barricades throughout the site. Further
\nchanges came for Jennings <\/b>in 2020,<\/b> when it became part of the Carlsberg<\/b> group,
\nfollowing the merger of Carlsberg <\/b>and Marston\u2019s.<\/b> This was closely followed by
\nthe Covid<\/b> pandemic, which sounded the death knell for brewing at Cockermouth.<\/b>
\nThe brewery closed its doors for the last time in November 2022,<\/b> bringing to an
\nend 194 years<\/b> of brewing in the town. And there the Jennings\u2019s<\/b> story might well
\nhave ended, were it not for a recent development.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Enter two local business owners,<\/b> Kurt Canfield<\/b> (CEO of
\nspecialist engineering business Delkia<\/b>) and Rebecca Canfield<\/b> (Proprietor of
\nwine and spirits company Wine and the Wood)<\/b>. The pair acquired the brewery for
\nan undisclosed sum, at the start of February<\/b>, and will take ownership of the
\nbrewery site, with the intention to resume brewing Jennings beer<\/b> once again, at
\nCockermouth.<\/b> The deal involves the transfer of all rights to the Jennings<\/b>
\ntrademarks, intellectual property and recipes. Bottled beer, bearing the
\nJennings brand, <\/b>will continue to be brewed by Carlsberg Britvic<\/b> until March
\n2025<\/b>, following which beer production will transfer to Jennings Brewery Limited.
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Rebecca Canfield<\/b>, explained that she had long cherished the
\nJennings Brewery<\/b> site, adding that preserving the heritage of the brewery and the
\nmaltings, was of utmost importance to her and her partner. With almost 200
\nyears <\/b>of brewing history at Cockermouth,<\/b> the one element that really attracted the
\ncouple to the project, was the fact it has its own well. Ms Canfield<\/b> stated
\nthat the pure, Lakeland water <\/b>drawn direct from the castle well, was integral
\nto the brewing of Jennings beer, and acted as the \u201csecret ingredient\u201d <\/i><\/b>which gives
\nthe beer its \u201cdistinctive Cumberland flavour.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Kurt Canfield<\/b> stated that the project the pair had embarked
\non, was an ambitious endeavour which will benefit the entire community. He added
\nthat there are plans to enhance the site while respecting the history and the heritage
\nof both the brewery and the maltings. Unsurprisingly, given the time that both
\nbuildings have stood idle, certain critical repairs are necessary, and there is
\nmuch to do to restore the Cockermouth brewery<\/b> to its former glory. But with a small,
\nbut passionate team around them, focussed on bringing that heritage back to
\nlife, the Canfields<\/b> remain confident of bringing back the great beers that
\nJennings<\/b> was once known for.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The new company, set up by the pair, is set to create seven
\nnew jobs in the Cockermouth <\/b>area, covering Head Brewer, the brewing team, plus
\nthe sales and marketing departments. Chris France<\/b>, the founder of specialty
\nbeer retailer Beer Hawk,<\/b> is joining as managing director of the new, Jennings Brewery
\nLimited. David Bodily<\/b>, head of properties and facilities at Carlsberg Britvic<\/b>,
\nsaid the Danish<\/b> brewing giant was pleased to have closed the sale of the business
\nto two new local owners, who are looking to preserve the brewery\u2019s heritage. He finished by saying, \u201cThe
\nbrewery occupies a unique location in Cockermouth, and we wish Kurt and Rebecca
\nevery success for the future.”<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

In the meantime, I\u2019m sure there are lots of details still to
\nbe sorted. For a start, is the brewing equipment still in place, as normally,
\nfollowing a closure, the \u201cwreckers\u201d <\/i><\/b>will be sent in, to strip out everything of
\nvalue. Reading between the lines, we must assume that essential parts of the plant
\nare still intact \u2013 mash tuns, coppers, fermenting vessels etc, plus ancillary items
\nsuch as refrigeration and cooling equipment.<\/p>\n

We must also assume that the new owners have done their homework,
\ndiligently and methodically, otherwise they might have bought the proverbial, \u201cpig
\nin a poke.\u201d <\/i><\/b>Assuming then, that everything is as it should be, and that brewing
\ncan recommence at Jennings<\/b>, we must wish the new owners, every success with
\ntheir new venture, and look forward to enjoying Jennings Lakeland Ales,<\/b> on future
\nvisits to the Lake District.<\/b><\/p>\n

Final note, much of the information regarding this most
\nwelcome of developments, came from an article that appeared on the Food Manufacture
\n<\/b>website, which you can read here. <\/a><\/u><\/b>Also, there are few photos to illustrate this
\npost, primarily because I have none of my own. My last visit to the Lake
\nDistrict<\/b> was over 40 years<\/b> ago, so there are certainly no electronic photographs
