Reading from prepared notes, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/05\/politics\/how-trump-decided-gaza-strip-take-over\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (stated)\">stated<\/a> that \u201cWe\u2019ll own it.\u201d He claimed that under this plan, Palestinians in Gaza would be relocated to other countries, and dismissed the notion that\u00a0 they would ever want to return. The President went on to say that he would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/06\/us\/politics\/trump-gaza-israel-annexation-palestinian.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (make a decision)\">make a decision<\/a> about a potential plan to allow Israeli annexation of the West Bank within the next month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to international law, forcibly transferring people from their land <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/wex\/forcible_transfer\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (is a crime)\">is a crime<\/a> against humanity. In addition, annexation would violate Palestinians\u2019 right to self-determination, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2020\/07\/israelopt-10-things-you-need-to-know-about-annexation\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (fundamental principle)\">fundamental principle<\/a> of international law.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nations around the world harshly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/2\/5\/strictly-prohibited-un-officials-denounce-trumps-gaza-plan-as-unlawful\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (condemned)\">condemned<\/a>\u00a0Trump\u2019s total disregard for international law. But every member state of the United Nations General Assembly must now act to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2024\/10\/1155861\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (fulfill its duty)\">fulfill its duty<\/a> under international law by abstaining from any actions enabling the Israeli military to continue its illegal occupation of Palestine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This means every state must stop shipments of weapons to Israel. The United States, for instance, is required to halt the shipment of the billion dollars worth of bombs, rifles, ammunition, and Caterpillar bulldozers that Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/5126369-congress-israel-arms-sale-hold\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (readied)\">readied<\/a> to send to Israel.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the past year and a half, Congressional Democrats have <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishdems.org\/crisis-in-israel-key-points\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (allowed)\">allowed<\/a> President Joe Biden to provision Israel with massive arms sales, including an $18 billion arms sale in June 2024, enabling Israel\u2019s sixteen month-long killing spree against Palestinians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Pankaj Mishra, an Indian essayist and novelist, describes the bleak reality of international weapons peddling in his new book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/780437\/the-world-after-gaza-by-pankaj-mishra\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (None)\"><em>The World After Gaza<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThere is something sick and rotten,\u201d Mishra <a href=\"https:\/\/carnegieendowment.org\/middle-east\/diwan\/2025\/01\/from-the-ruins-of-gaza?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (writes)\">writes<\/a>, \u201cabout states and societies that not only support and enable mass killings but also make money off of them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the world, grassroots groups are campaigning to uphold international laws and to resist governments that support the wholesale Israeli slaughter and destruction of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2003, Irish activists have protested the use of Shannon Airport for military purposes, since Ireland is a neutral country. Beginning in the summer of 2024, protesters held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shannonwatch.org\/content\/summer-protest-under-way-shannon\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (weekly demonstrations)\">weekly demonstrations<\/a> insisting that the government of Ireland not allow use of Shannon Airport for the transport of weapons or equipment to Israel\u2019s military. The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsc.ie\/event\/shannon-stop-arming-israel-national-mobilisation-at-shannon-airport-2\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (organizing a protest)\">organizing a protest<\/a> at Shannon Airport on February 9, is demanding the Irish government stop \u201cthe use of Irish airspace to deliver arms, tech and logistical support to the genocidal, apartheid state of Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The International Federation for Human Rights has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fidh.org\/en\/international-advocacy\/european-union\/letter-by-163-ngos-and-trade-unions-to-president-von-der-leyen-on-eu\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (pointed out)\">pointed out<\/a> that the European Union is Israel\u2019s biggest trade partner, <a href=\"https:\/\/policy.trade.ec.europa.eu\/eu-trade-relationships-country-and-region\/countries-and-regions\/israel_en\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (accounting in 2022)\">accounting in 2022<\/a> for 29 percent of trade in goods. Israel is also among the European Union\u2019s main trading partners in the Mediterranean region.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, a coalition of more than 160 human rights organizations, trade unions, and civil society groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fidh.org\/en\/international-advocacy\/european-union\/letter-by-163-ngos-and-trade-unions-to-president-von-der-leyen-on-eu\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (called on)\">called on<\/a> the European Commission to immediately ban all trade and business with Israel\u2019s illegal settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The coalition\u2019s demand follows the landmark advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in July 2024, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/09\/israel-must-implement-unga-resolution-by-ending-its-unlawful-occupation-of-palestinian-territory\/#:~:text=States%2C%20including%20allies%20of%20Israel,Palestinians%20whose%20rights%20it%20controls.%E2%80%9D&amp;text=The%20UNGA%20resolution%20passed%20with,removed%20as%20rapidly%20as%20possible.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (stated)\">stated<\/a> that, \u201cPending an end to Israel\u2019s occupation, third states must immediately stop all forms of aid or assistance that help maintain the unlawful occupation, including halting arms transfers to Israel and ceasing all trade with illegal settlements.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Robert Jereski, an attorney in New York City, works with a coalition of activists, including anti-war group Code Pink, which is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codepink.org\/general_assembly_suspend_israel\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (campaigning)\">campaigning<\/a> for U.N. member states to suspend Israel from the United Nations due to its murder and dispossession of Palestinians. Jereski says via email that, despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2025\/01\/gaza-ceasefire-reveals-israels-fragility-and-the-transformative-power-of-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (January ceasefire agreement)\">January ceasefire agreement<\/a> between Israel and Hamas, Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/israel-west-bank-offensive-deaths-palestinians-trump-sanctions-settlers\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (renewed&#xA0;offensives)\">renewed\u00a0offensives<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0West Bank mark a shift in its genocidal tactics rather than an actual ceasefire.\u00a0Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/2\/2\/multiple-mass-explosions-destroy-20-buildings-in-west-banks-jenin\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (bombing of Jenin)\">bombing of Jenin<\/a> has led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2025\/2\/6\/violent-israeli-raids-forcibly-displace-26000-palestinians-in-west-bank\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (forced displacement)\">forced displacement<\/a> of at least 26,000 Palestinians. The Israeli military has escalated widespread arrests and restrictions while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/2\/7\/israeli-army-demolishes-homes-in-jenin-continues-raids-across-west-bank\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (settlement expansion continues)\">settlement expansion continues<\/a> at an unprecedented pace, with frequent approvals for new Israeli outposts and housing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s most recent statements, coupled with his <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-un-human-rights-palestinian-refugees-israel-05e1d57bbb41df38771d1ab69adb21a3\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (withdrawal)\">withdrawal<\/a> of the United States from the United Nations Human Rights Council, underscore the urgent need for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to hold an emergency meeting. The UNGA can judge whether the United States has failed as an impartial arbiter and is, instead, party to the genocide in Gaza. Further, the UNGA can decide whether to suspend the U.S.\u2019s veto power in the U.N. Security Council on matters pertaining to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Pankaj Mishra has observed, there is something sick and rotten in the act of enabling and profiting from mass killings.
