{"id":77136,"date":"2025-02-09T04:09:48","date_gmt":"2025-02-09T04:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/analytics\/new-google-tag-manager-web-container-client-for-server-side-tagging\/"},"modified":"2025-02-09T04:09:48","modified_gmt":"2025-02-09T04:09:48","slug":"new-google-tag-manager-web-container-client-for-server-side-tagging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=77136","title":{"rendered":"New Google Tag Manager Web Container Client For Server Side Tagging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>With the introduction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/server-side-tagging-google-tag-manager\/\">server-side tagging<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/tagmanager.google.com\/\">Google Tag Manager<\/a>, the variety of things you can do with your own server-side <strong>proxy<\/strong> is mind-boggling:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce <strong>client-side bloat<\/strong> by consolidating data streams and distributing them to vendor endpoints server-side.<\/li>\n<li>Improve <strong>data security<\/strong> by adding safeguards and validations to prevent harmful data from being sent to vendor endpoints.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enrich<\/strong> data server-side, by combining the incoming data stream with data from APIs and data stores that you own and control.<\/li>\n<li>Remove <strong>third-party<\/strong> downloads from the browser by proxying them via the server-side container.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This last point is what this article expands on. If you check out <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_c4JEfSkP6U?t=1515\">this video (jumps straight to the relevant part)<\/a>, you can see how it\u2019s possible to already proxy popular libraries like <strong>analytics.js<\/strong> and <strong>gtag.js<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In essence, the server-side container downloads the library from Google and then serves it to the browser. To activate it, you need to create a new client with it.<\/p>\n<p>Browse to <strong>Clients<\/strong> in the Google Tag Manager UI and click to create a new client.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2564 \/ 800;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/new-client.jpg\" title=\"New client\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"800\" width=\"2564\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/new-client.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"New client\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Click the <strong>Client Configuration<\/strong> box to open a selector. Find the <strong>Google Tag Manager: Web Container<\/strong> client template, and click to choose it.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1718 \/ 720;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/gtm-web-container.jpg\" title=\"GTM Web Container\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"720\" width=\"1718\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/gtm-web-container.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"GTM Web Container\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>To configure the client, you basically need to list the Google Tag Manager <strong>Container IDs<\/strong> that should be proxied via this client.<\/p>\n<p>To add a new ID, simply click <strong>Add Container ID<\/strong>, and add it to the list.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Since the <em>Allowed Container IDs<\/em> field can take variables as well, you could theoretically create a variable that fetches the container ID from the request URL directly (i.e. anything after <code>?id=<\/code> in <code>https:\/\/server-container.com\/gtm.js?id=GTM-ABCDEFG<\/code>). However, I think it\u2019s a good idea to not create a system like that to avoid the endpoint being spammed with requests for containers that are unrelated to your setup.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1804 \/ 1194;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/gtm-id-in-client.jpg\" title=\"GTM ID in client\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1194\" width=\"1804\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/gtm-id-in-client.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"GTM ID in client\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Once you <strong>Save<\/strong> this client, your Server container has now been enabled to respond to requests for Google Tag Manager web containers. If your container serves from <code>https:\/\/sgtm.simoahava.com<\/code>, the updated snippet would look like this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-html\" data-lang=\"html\"><span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\"><!-- Google Tag Manager --><\/span>\nscript&gt;(<span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(w,d,s,l,i){w[l]=w[l]||[];w[l].push({<span style=\"color:#a50\">'gtm.start'<\/span>:\n<span style=\"color:#00a\">new<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0aa\">Date<\/span>().getTime(),event:<span style=\"color:#a50\">'gtm.js'<\/span>});<span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> f=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[<span style=\"color:#099\">0<\/span>],\nj=d.createElement(s),dl=l!=<span style=\"color:#a50\">'dataLayer'<\/span>?<span style=\"color:#a50\">'&amp;l='<\/span>+l:<span style=\"color:#a50\">''<\/span>;j.async=<span style=\"color:#00a\">true<\/span>;j.src=\n<span style=\"color:#a50\">'https:\/\/sgtm.simoahava.com\/gtm.js?id='<\/span>+i+dl;f.parentNode.insertBefore(j,f);\n})(<span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>,<span style=\"color:#0aa\">document<\/span>,<span style=\"color:#a50\">'script'<\/span>,<span style=\"color:#a50\">'dataLayer'<\/span>,<span style=\"color:#a50\">'GTM-PZ7GMV9'<\/span>);<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">script<\/span>&gt;\n<span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\"><!-- End Google Tag Manager --><\/span><\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve updated the snippet, you can take the Server container to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/server-side-tagging-google-tag-manager\/#preview-and-debug\">debug mode<\/a>, and see if it responds to requests for the GTM container:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1560 \/ 972;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/gtm-debug.jpg\" title=\"Debug responds\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"972\" width=\"1560\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/gtm-debug.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Debug responds\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>You need to also check where the request for the <strong>gtm.js<\/strong> library is sent using your browser\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/web\/tools\/chrome-devtools\/network\">network tools<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2006 \/ 546;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/check-network-tools.jpg\" title=\"Network tools\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"546\" width=\"2006\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/10\/check-network-tools.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Network tools\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>And, of course, make sure that all your tags work as they should by using whatever debugging tools you have at your disposal.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"things-to-note\">Things to note<\/h2>\n<p>Currently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/guide-zones-google-tag-manager-360\/\">zone containers<\/a> will still load from <code>googletagmanager.com<\/code>, but this will likely be fixed shortly to load these also from your server-side endpoint.<\/p>\n<p>When you choose to serve the Google Tag Manager container from your own first-party domain <strong>and<\/strong> you\u2019re also sending data to a Universal Analytics and\/or GA4 client, you need to make sure you enable the <strong>gtag<\/strong> paths in these clients. This is because once you move to loading the Google Tag Manager container from your first-party domain, any <strong>gtag.js<\/strong> libraries that are loaded via this container will <em>also<\/em> need to be loaded from your first-party domain. So make sure you check the relevant options if you\u2019re using these two clients.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>NOTE!<\/strong> If you want to proxy the <strong>analytics.js<\/strong> library from your server-side domain, you must <strong>also<\/strong> check the <em>gtag paths<\/em> option and add the <code>UA-XXXXX-Y<\/code> to the list. This setting also applies to that library.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1878 \/ 1084;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/11\/ua-paths.jpg\" title=\"Universal Analytics client paths\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1084\" width=\"1878\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/11\/ua-paths.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Universal Analytics client paths\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1810 \/ 1054;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/11\/ga4-paths.jpg\" title=\"GA4 client paths\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1054\" width=\"1810\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2020\/11\/ga4-paths.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"GA4 client paths\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Final thing to note is that the <code><noscript\/><\/code> snippet can also be modified to load the iframe from your first-party endpoint. The only caveat is that the HTML page in the iframe will continue loading items from <code>googletagmanager.com<\/code>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In case you\u2019re wondering, <strong>yes<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/9008080#google_tag_manager_verification\">search console verification<\/a> WILL work with your new first-party <code><noscript\/><\/code> snippet as well!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Even though you absolutely don\u2019t <strong>have<\/strong> to use a web container when working with server-side tagging, I think that many people do and will continue doing so because of the ease that Google Tag Manager brings to tagging a website.<\/p>\n<p>Being able to proxy the Google Tag Manager container introduces obvious benefits for moving third-party scripts to a first-party context.<\/p>\n<p>You are, of course, <em>technically<\/em> still downloading vendor JavaScript from their CDN.
