Now, Florida is taking the litigious path. <\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s Surgeon General\u2019s office wants to bring criminal charges against any broadcasters airing an advertisement it doesn\u2019t like. Right now, the far-right administration in Tallahassee doesn\u2019t like ads from <a href=\"https:\/\/floridiansprotectingfreedom.com\/censorship-lawsuit\/\">Floridians Protecting Freedom<\/a> and their \u201cYes on 4 Campaign,\u201d a ballot measure that seeks to overturn Florida\u2019s six-week abortion ban.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Caroline&quot;\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7jJiEE_AkPA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Deborah and Lee&quot;\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hoAVCFQlD28?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state of Florida\u2019s crusade against Amendment 4 is unconstitutional government interference \u2013 full stop,\u201d said Lauren Brenzel, Yes on 4 Campaign Director. \u201cThe State cannot coerce television stations into removing political speech from the airwaves in an attempt to keep their abortion ban in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/17\/media\/florida-judge-tv-abortion-rights-ad-health\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>, Chief U.S. District Judge Mark E. Walker of the Northern District of Florida granted a temporary restraining order against Florida\u2019s surgeon general last week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government cannot excuse its indirect censorship of political speech simply by declaring the disfavored speech is \u2018false,\u2019\u201d the judge said in a written opinion. He added, \u201cTo keep it simple for the State of Florida: it\u2019s the First Amendment, stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ballot measure is one of nine similar measures across the country, according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/18\/us-news\/judge-tells-floridas-top-doctor-not-to-threaten-tv-stations-over-abortion-rights-ads\/\">The New York Post<\/a><\/em>. It would require the approval of 60% of voters to be adopted and would override the state law that bans abortion in most cases after the first six weeks of pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Across the nation, 24 states\u2014including Texas, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania\u2014do <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/States_without_initiative_or_referendum\">not<\/a><\/em> provide for statewide citizen-initiated ballot measures. <\/p>\n<p><h3 class=\"jp-relatedposts-headline\"><em>Related<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Texas, the Attorney General\u2019s office has a nasty habit of using the courts to interfere with citizens groups, churches, and others working for the common good.
