A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: sentiment analyses of
\nnew connections and communities in a COVID world. <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n
Quarantine re-makes the city around us, re-defining \u201cinside\u201d
\nand \u201coutside,\u201d \u201chome\u201d and \u201cneighborhood.\u201d\u00a0
\n<\/span>\u201cStaying home\u201d means complying with a socially and politically
\nconstructed bubble that delimits not only who or what can move from one side or
\nanother, but the protocols to be followed when that barrier is breached.\u00a0 <\/span>Moreover, transitioning from one to another
\nis not just a matter of spatial movement, it also involves a shift in identity,
\nfrom the one quarantined to the one not quarantined.\u00a0 <\/span>Finally, quarantine is a temporal state: fourteen
\ndays, or until the city lifts the quarantine measures.\u00a0 <\/span>Under these conditions, what does \u201chome\u201d
\nmean?\u00a0 <\/span>What does \u201cinside\u201d mean?\u00a0 <\/span>And when one is quarantined, what do more
\ncollective identities like \u201ccommunity\u201d and \u201cneighborhood\u201d mean?\u00a0 <\/span>Under these circumstances, \u201chome\u201d can have a
\nnegative valence\u2014it can be isolating and alienating from the people around
\nyou.\u00a0 <\/span>On the other hand, \u201chome\u201d can be a
\nsource of new realizations of self, and new formed of connectedness and solidarity.\u00a0 <\/span>In this project, I utilize a large set of Twitter
\ndata gathering thoughts on quarantine from different countries at different
\ntimes, from March to September.\u00a0 <\/span>Mostly
\nurban, the tweets originate in cities undergoing quarantine from around the
\nworld: Seoul, Paris, New York, each instituting different quarantine protocols
\nat different times.\u00a0 <\/span>Using sentiment
\nanalysis and textual analysis, I examine Twitter as 1) a source of positive and
\nnegative valuations of quarantine; and 2) as a record of activities and
\nrelationships forged under quarantine.\u00a0 <\/span>On
\nthe one hand, preliminary results would seem to validate dire predictions from
\nDurkheim, Simmel and others with regards to alienation in the city.\u00a0 <\/span>And, indeed, many people use Twitter to
\nbemoan their isolation and their truncated lives.\u00a0 <\/span>On the other, many Twitter users explore the
\npossibility of new connections with self and with community amidst physical
\nseparation.\u00a0 <\/span>In this, quarantine\u2019s
\ntemporality plays an importance role by allowing people to construct visions of
\ncommunity and togetherness as a future temporality.\u00a0 <\/span>This paper explores the possibilities for
\nbuilding urban community in a pandemic world through an exploration of the way
\n\u201chome\u201d and \u201cneighborhood\u201d have been re-conceptualized.\u00a0 <\/span>Ultimately, what comes from this research are
\ninsights into being together while being apart, and \u201chome\u201d as a staging area
\nfor the construction of community. \u00a0<\/span>The
\nessay ends with hopeful speculations on a post-pandemic city that retains communal
