\nVIA Rail\u2019s Jasper \u2013
\nPrince Rupert Train<\/i> used to be a named train \u2013 The\u00a0Skeena<\/i> \u2013 after the river it runs alongside with for about 170 miles
\non its journey.\u00a0 Now simply known by a
\nboring name, it is nevertheless a specular ride: through the Rockies, along
\nthree different rivers, across dense forests, lumber mills, towns small and
\nlarge, right down to individual outposts.\u00a0
\nThe westward journey ends at the Pacific Ocean at Prince Rupert, an
\nimportant port in northwestern British Columbia.\u00a0 More than a scenic ride, the Jasper \u2013 Prince Rupert Train<\/i> is also a
\nflag stop train that provides a crucial lifeline to those that live in the
\nremote areas along the way.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nThe 1160 km (721 mile) trip takes two days, making an
\novernight stop at Prince George, British Columbia, making it a day-time only
\ntrain.\u00a0 The train offers simple coach
\nseating (\u201cEconomy Class\u201d) and snack\/bar service in the winter.\u00a0 In the summer, on certain days, the train
\npicks up a Panoramic Car as part of \u201cTouring Class\u201d (reserved seats in a big
\nwindow car and meals included).\u00a0
\nThroughout the year, the majestic boat tailed dome car known as the Park Car<\/i> rounds the train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

\nI rode westbound train #5 that departed from Jasper,
\nAlberta.\u00a0 I arrived at the picturesque
\nRocky Mountain resort town on train #1, the westbound Canadian<\/i>, from Toronto.\u00a0
\nSince neither the Canadian<\/i> nor
\nthe Jasper \u2013 Prince Rupert Train <\/i>run
\ndaily, the best connection is a 23-hour overnight layover.\u00a0 As it turned out, I needed most of that time.
\n\u00a0With Canadian\u2019s<\/i>
\nnow-expected-as-normal lengthy delays, I arrived at Jasper 18-hours late, early
\nin the morning the next day.\u00a0 Good
\nnews:\u00a0 I got to enjoy Canadian\u2019s<\/i> famous Rack of Lamb on the
\ndinner service that I would have missed; bad news:\u00a0 I stayed just four-hours at the hotel that I
\nhad already paid for in Jasper.<\/p>\n

\n
Day 1<\/h4>\n

\nDeparture from Jasper on this Wednesday afternoon was
\ndelayed by 20 minutes.\u00a0 The train took a
\nwhile being made up only one hour before departure: cutting cars, locomotives,
\nwying in the Jasper yard.\u00a0 The short
\nthree-car train consisted of a F-40 locomotive (#6429), baggage car (#8613),
\ncoach (#8133), and dome car (#8714, Strathcona
\nPark<\/i>).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nOn board, Train Manager J-F briefed safety instructions and
\nservice available.\u00a0 As it turned out, J-F
\nwas the only customer-facing staff member on board.\u00a0 J-F played the role of Train Manager\/Baggage
\nMan\/Service Attendant\/Bartender\/Tour Guide for the whopping six
\npassengers.\u00a0 Five of us came off the Canadian<\/i> earlier that morning, to which
\nJ-F was sympathetic of our plight.\u00a0
\nBesides me, there was only one other tourist on board: a fellow from the
\nU.K. who joined the Canadian<\/i> at
\nEdmonton.\u00a0 It was supposed to be a
\nseven-hour morning scenic ride to Jasper that turned out to be an overnight
\ntrip in his coach seat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nUnlike the Canadian<\/i>,
\nthe Park<\/i> Car on the Jasper \u2013 Prince Rupert Train<\/i> had not
\nbeen refurbished and still sported the green-gray VIA interior from the
\n1990s.\u00a0 Worn and drab looking, this Park<\/i> was showing its age.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the windows were crystal clear
\nand clean (much better than one of the Skyline<\/i>
\ndomes on my Canadian<\/i> train), and the
\ninterior was kept spick and span.\u00a0
\nDespite having four bedrooms and one drawing room in this car, they are
\nnot sold on this train.\u00a0 Only the drawing
\nroom is occupied: by the Train Manager himself!\u00a0
\nIndeed, according to J-F, the Jasper
\n\u2013 Prince Rupert Train<\/i> is the most senior route at the Vancouver base.\u00a0 There are no dishes to wash, no beds to make,
\nand the trips are short and easy.\u00a0
\nDespite the easy trip and small crowd, J-F\u2019s service was top notch.\u00a0 It was comparable or better than those found
\non board the Canadian<\/i>, VIA Rail\u2019s
\npremier train.\u00a0 J-F provided scenic
\ncommentary for all three passengers that chose to spend their time in the dome
\nand even asked the engineers to slow down at scenic points of interest.\u00a0 In between sights, J-F cheerfully fulfilled
\ndrink and snack orders at the bar.\u00a0 It
\nliterally felt like a private train with the conductor AND bar attendant at
\nyour disposal!<\/p>\n

\nUpon departure from Jasper, our train made a smoky assault
\nthrough the Rockies \u2013 peaking at the Continental Divide at Yellowhead Pass
\n(elevation 1133 m \/ 3717 ft).\u00a0 There, we
\ncrossed the border between Alberta and British Columbia and set our watches
\nback one hour to Pacific Time Zone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nAfter running past a mostly obscured Mt Robson (highest peak
\nin the Canadian Rockies), at Moose Lake, we met the Fraser River which we
\nfollowed all the way to Prince George.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

\nThe
\nknockout punch of the Rockies quickly settled to gentle mountains as we
\nparalleled the Cariboo Mountains while we meanderer through valleys carved by
\nthe Fraser.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nWe slowly approached McBride, passing the elegant Grand
\nTrunk Pacific station built in 1919.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nFlag stop signal absent, we rolled on.\u00a0
\nI later learned the flag for this particular stop is the station garbage
\ncan positioned at a specific spot.\u00a0 Along
\nthe route, each flag stop passenger creates their own unique signal (or \u201cflag\u201d)
\nfor the train.\u00a0 The only requirement is the
\nflag has to be on a pre-determined straight track distance where the engineers would
\nhave enough time to see the flag and stop the train.\u00a0 All of the flaggers are regulars on the
\ntrain, so engineers are familiar with every seemingly-out-of-nowhere stop in
\nthe wilderness.\u00a0 On board, if the passenger
\nwas riding the train to their flag stop, they know precisely the milepost for
\ntheir stop \u2013 right down to two digits past the decimal point.\u00a0 Impressive!<\/p>\n

\nWe made good running times on this first leg of the journey,
\npassing three CN trains \u2013 two double-stacks and a mixed freight \u2013 and one CP
\nloaded coal train.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nWhen dinner time
\narrived, I had a choice between two different kinds of refrigerated sandwiches
\nfrom the snack bar.\u00a0 <\/span>Hot selections in
\nthe menu (I wanted pizza) were not available.\u00a0
\n<\/span>My roast beef and cheese was petrified, but served its purpose as
\nsustenance.\u00a0 <\/span>No new catering would be boarded
\nat Prince George, so J-F gave me some suggestions of where to pick up food in
\ntown for the next day\u2019s journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nWe were on track for 7:30 pm arrival to Prince George, a reasonable
\n22 minutes delay.\u00a0 For those of us
\nstaying overnight, J-F ensured we knew where we were going and paired up those \u00a0that happened to book the same hotel (share a
\ntaxi or walk together).<\/p>\n

\nAs soon as we repacked our bags and put our coats on (with
\nmap in hand), we came to a halt just outside of town.\u00a0 <\/span>Bad news.\u00a0
\n<\/span>The yardmaster wanted to hold our train so two eastbound freight trains
\ncan depart the yard.\u00a0 <\/span>One hour quickly
\nturned into 90 minutes.\u00a0 <\/span>J-F graciously
\nbrought us hot chocolate while we waited.\u00a0
\n<\/span>When we finally rolled into Prince George, our nonstop train with only
\nsix passengers on board arrived over two hours late at 9:20 pm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDay 2<\/span><\/h4>\n

\nAfter a night at the Travelodge with a conveniently located
\nTim Horton\u2019s on the next block (I would be having Timmy\u2019s for breakfast, lunch,
\nand dinner this day), I walked six big city blocks back to the station.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nPrince George station is modern but architecturally boring.\u00a0 VIA Rail shares the building with the local
\ntourism board and other office tenants.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe journey on day two began with 12-passengers; three of us
\ncontinued from the previous day.\u00a0 Train
\nManager J-F came into the station, walked to the boarding door and gave a big
\nwave: \u201cwestbound train, everyone let\u2019s go\u201d.\u00a0
\nAnd off we went!\u00a0 \u00a0Once again, it
\nwas a very family-like, community atmosphere.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nAt 7:56 am, train number 5 pulled out of Prince George, four minutes
\nearly.\u00a0 We paused next to our eastbound
\ntwin parked short of the station for the engineer to retrieve something from
\nthe locomotive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nHot tea with the morning paper.\u00a0 With just one other passenger in the dome – this is the life!<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nAt Prince George, the Fraser River continues its flow south
\nto the Pacific Ocean at Vancouver.\u00a0 Our
\ntrain now joined the Nechako River.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nThe morning took us through the forestry industry with numerous lumber yards (majority on the left side heading westbound)…<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

…and towns that grew around them (like Vanderhoof).<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nAppropriately, we passed
\ntwo eastbound trains carrying woodchips \u2013 supposedly a new source for
\nfuel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nWe also made our only flag stop of
\nthe trip \u2013 a drop off.\u00a0 The hearty
\nwilderness fellow assured us minimum disruption by disembarking directly from
\nthe baggage car and unloading his own cargo.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nOur train drift past Fraser and Burns Lakes, popular spots
\nfor boating and water recreation.\u00a0
\n<\/span>However, now in winter, iced and snowed over, there was no distinction between
\nland and water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Remnants like a pier and
\nbeach playground provided clues that these desolate scenes offer wet fun in the
\nwarmer months.<\/p>\n

\nAlas, it started snowing.\u00a0
\nDespite sleet quickly dotting the windows, it was mesmerizing watching
\nicy rain drops and snow flurries crashing against the dome.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nMore lakes, more sawmills.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nApproaching Smithers, we overtook this parked train with a
\nsad looking BC Rail Dash 8-40CM on the second unit.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nWe pulled into Smithers for a fresh air stop and an
\noperating crew change.\u00a0 Despite running
\n45 minutes late, J-F still gave everyone ample time for get some cold outside
\nair and a smoke break.\u00a0 A good number of
\npassengers also departed train here.\u00a0 Arriving
\nin the middle of the afternoon, Trackside
\nCantina<\/i> inside the 1919-vintage depot had just closed after lunch.\u00a0 The smell inside the depot made me crave for
\nchips and salsa.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nSmithers is surrounded by four mountain ranges.\u00a0 Wispy clouds hung along mountain peaks as the
\nsky continued to clear.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nAfter passing
\ncommunity of New Hazelton, we joined the Skeena River, the (former) namesake
\nfor our train.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nWith the setting sun, we ran alongside the Skeena and the
\nHazelton Mountains, passing a row of distinctive sawtooth peaks known as the
\nSeven Sisters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nOur daylight run alongside the Skeena River would be
\nshortlived.\u00a0 We held for more than one
\nhour at Pacific<\/i> siding, about 30
\nmiles outside of Terrace for an eastbound train.\u00a0 There, the sun sat bringing sightseeing to an
\nend.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nWe pulled into Terrance two hours late.\u00a0 Here, we picked up five or six passengers and
\npaused for another fresh air \/ smoke break stop. \u00a0The depot, built in 1914, is actually the
\nformer home of the town founder, George Little.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nUpon departing Terrance, J-F briefed passengers that he
\nestimates arriving in Prince Rupert at 10 pm (two hours late), but was
\nconfident that it would be sometime today.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nAt Port Edward, seven rail miles from our final destination,
\nwe made a (seemingly inexplicable) stop at a grade crossing.\u00a0 \u201cLadies and gentlemen, our trip ends here
\ntonight,\u201d announced our Train Manager.\u00a0 I
\nwas puzzled yet amused at the same time.\u00a0
\nThere was a freight train blocking the entrance to the Port and its crew
\nwas not expected until midnight.\u00a0 Sadly, this
\nwas a comical yet common theme throughout my Canadian rail journey.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

\nJ-F called in taxis from Prince Rupert that would take us to
\nour final destination in town.\u00a0 <\/span>Well, at
\nleast I didn\u2019t have to get myself to my hotel: VIA Rail picked up the entire
\ntab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Final stop for the passengers on this night!\u00a0 The train needed to continue to the station proper for the trip east the next morning.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n\n

Seven miles from my intended destination, my rail journey across Canada ended unceremoniously at a grade crossing, completing the trip in a taxi.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

\nIf I was taking this train again, I would take it eastbound departing
\nfrom Prince Rupert.\u00a0 Departing at 8 am,
\nthe beautiful scenery alongside the Skeena between Prince Rupert and Terrance
\nwould be guaranteed in daylight.\u00a0 Sure, in
\nthe winter, the run through the Rockies and the arrival in Jasper would most
\nlikely be in darkness.\u00a0 However, since
\npart of the route is on the same trackage as the Canadian<\/i>, anything missed I would have seen previously.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nMy experience onboard the Jasper \u2013 Prince Rupert Train <\/i>was absolutely fantastic!\u00a0 Train Manager J-F really made it special,
\nexceeding all of my expectations.\u00a0 Where
\nelse could one have a private train experience at an economy class price?<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nPrince Rupert\u2019s original CN station (built in 1921-22) is located
\nat the waterfront at town center.\u00a0 This
\nsad-looking boarded up brick building is a designated Canadian Historical
\nPlace.\u00a0 In the background is Kwinitsa Depot,
\na Grand Trunk Pacific \u201cType E\u201d station built in 1911.\u00a0 It was moved here in 1985.\u00a0 Supposedly a museum, it appeared to be
\nabandoned.\u00a0 VIA Rail\u2019s current Prince
\nRupert station is two miles away, at the edge of town, co-located with the
\nferry terminal.\u00a0<\/p>\n
