The Minie ball, in particular, was notorious for shattering bone. Doctors soon found that trying to save a limb was counterproductive\u2014it almost always became infected and the patient died. We have all seen gruesome photos of severed arms and legs piled up next to a field hospital, sometimes higher than the roof.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icollector.com\/Military-Amputation-Kit-c1861-G-Tiemann-Co-New-York-114398_i38146763\">upcoming auction<\/a> has a very nice example of a Civil War era amputation kit (and it\u2019s not cheap) that shows what a typical surgeon would have used.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17934 lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.brettschulte.net\/CWBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Amputation-Kit.jpg?resize=500%2C392&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.brettschulte.net\/CWBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Amputation-Kit.jpg?resize=500%2C392&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.brettschulte.net\/CWBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Amputation-Kit.jpg?resize=768%2C602&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.brettschulte.net\/CWBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Amputation-Kit.jpg?w=912&amp;ssl=1 912w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Although we think of Civil War medicine as primitive (and it was by today\u2019s standards), medical practice made huge strides during the war. At he conflict\u2019s beginning, for instance, the death rate for hospitals hovered around 50%, when the were available. By war\u2019s end the figure had been reduced to 6-8% on both sides.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: Speaking of interesting things at auctions, I came across this. It\u2019s a wooden scale model of the <a href=\"https:\/\/live.amoskeagauction.com\/m\/lot-details\/index\/catalog\/51\/lot\/28407?url=%2Fm%2Fview-auctions%2Fcatalog%2Fid%2F51%3Fpage%3D32\">C.S.S.
