Firefox torpedo sinks German publishers<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Publishers
\nin Germany have seen programmatic ad revenues plummet<\/a> since Mozilla Firefox\u2019s latest anti-tracking update<\/a> was brought in a few weeks ago. In a
\ncountry that traditionally favours Firefox due to its non-profit pro-privacy
\napproach, this is seen as another nail in the coffin for cookie-based
\ntargeting. According to Index Exchange<\/a>, average bid rates (how
\nfrequently buyers choose to bid on a piece of inventory), are down almost 40%
\non Firefox in Germany with further losses predicted in the future. The risk is
\nthat publishers will turn to Google, Facebook and universal login which would
\nboost the tech giants\u2019 grip over the German market and have serious
\nramifications for data privacy.<\/p>\n

The shifting landscape of digital analytics<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the
\nincreasingly complex world of web analytics, there has never been a more exciting time<\/a> for analysts or the organisations
\nhiring them. As well as attributes such as understanding the technical aspects of data
\ncollection, marketing strategies and effective communication, potential analysts
\nare increasingly required to pack more advanced skill sets. BI platforms (Tableau<\/a>, Power
\nBI<\/a>, Qlik<\/a>, Domo<\/a>, etc.) are now
\nindispensable for their toolbelt, as well as the ability to program with data
\nusing Python<\/a> or R<\/a> (machine learning and data science), not forgetting a
\nsolid understanding of statistics. <\/p>\n

Naturally it\u2019s also important to aim for the most forward-thinking
\nanalytics companies that have tools designed to be used
\nby everyone across the board. Despite the
\ngrowing appetite of analysts for advanced tools, the challenge is to provide
\nsimple access to data that can be used instantly by business users who do not
\nhave specific analytics skills. Fortunately, such a tool exists<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n

The cost of poor-quality data<\/strong><\/h2>\n

With 97% of
\ncompanies committed to turning their marketing data into insights, quality data
\nhas become a highly valuable asset<\/a>. Indeed, over half of them are actively using
\ndata to understand customer needs, find new customers and above all, increase
\ntheir value. So, what are the financial consequences of making do with poor
\nquality data?\u00a0 According to research<\/a>, 83% of US companies believe that their
\nrevenue is negatively affected by inaccurate and incomplete customer or
\nprospect data. The costs can involve wasted resources, loss of productivity and
\nsignificant communications expenses. However it is possible to turn the
\nsituation around by implementing a series of practical improvements<\/a> to your data management strategy. <\/p>\n

Google vs the French news<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Google is refusing to pay for French news snippets despite the EU legal requirement
\n(article here<\/a> in French). The search giant
\nannounced that it won\u2019t pay anything to French news organisations for the
\nprivilege of linking to their articles. Google believes that France\u2019s version
\nof the law allows them to include an article\u2019s headline in a search result, but
\nnot the \u201csnippet\u201d that often appears below the headline. So to
\ncomply, it will remove the snippet below links to French news sites, as well as
\nthumbnail images that sometimes appear next to news results. However, French publishers believe<\/a> that Google is profiting at their
\nexpense by showing portions of content for free, causing them to lose over \u20ac250
\nmillion a year.<\/p>\n

As the tech giants continue to squeeze<\/a> digital media, Google is sending a
\nclear signal that it has no intention of paying news publishers for linking to their content. Indeed
\nSpain tried to force Google to pay publishers for taking snippets of their news
\narticles, but that backfired<\/a> after Google News pulled out of the
\ncountry entirely. So far France is the only EU country to implement the region\u2019s
\nfar-reaching copyright reforms adopted earlier this year \u2013 to try to preserve
\nthe freedom of the European press. <\/p>\n

GDPR consent consultation<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In a new twist for the GDPR in France, the CNIL is launching a consultation<\/a> on how companies obtain the consent
\nof Internet users (article in French<\/a>). In July they announced the new
\nguidelines for the collection of Internet users\u2019 consent \u2013 in particular,
\nconsent for the deposit of cookies, which remains extremely vague for market
\nplayers, more than a year after the implementation of the GDPR. While this
\nannouncement was received with mixed reviews, particularly from some consumer
\nassociations, it reflects the CNIL\u2019s desire to go further in its
\nrecommendations in order to provide operators with a more precise, reliable and
\ntangible GDPR framework. <\/p>\n

In parallel, various French digital comm & marketing associations
\nincluding GESTE<\/a> legally requested that the CNIL
\nextend the scope of consultation beyond cookie consent to the realms of
\ncommercial prospecting. There is widespread fear that marketing and advertising
\nactivities will be completely undermined and that smaller players will cease to
\nbe economically viable, to the benefit of the dominant international players in
\nthis sector.<\/p>\n

Responsible economic development in terms of personal data protection is
\nthe hot topic of the moment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Deep learning on your plate!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There\u2019s a
\nbrand-new app on the market that allows you to log everything you eat to follow
\na healthier diet. Foodvisor<\/a> lets users to take a photo of their
\nplate and instantly receive a full list of nutrition facts as well as setting
\ngoals and monitoring diet progress over time. Advanced machine learning meets
\nhealthy living!<\/p>\n

Domino\u2019s goes AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Global
\npizza chain Domino\u2019s has gone all Minority Report with its new AI-based DOM Pizza Checker<\/a>. As well as checking up on the quality<\/a> of your pizza, the machine learning algorithms
\nare designed to better align stores around the world and even display pizza
\nchecker scores on a live feed. The claims that the DOM is in fact a
\nsophisticated new surveillance technology are of course completely unfounded<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n
