\nonly are these cookies cute, they are SO delicious!
\nYou’ll get a double dose of chocolate and hazelnut, both in the cookie and
\n the filling.

For the cookies, I used hazelnut flavoring<\/b>. My grocery store
\ncarries it with the extracts.
(If you can’t find hazelnut, substitute with
\nvanilla. They’ll still be delicious, just not quite as hazelnutty.)<\/p>\n

\n You can find
\n hazelnut flavoring on Amazon<\/a><\/b>, but if you’re trying to cut back on Amazon purchases like I am,
\n buy it direct<\/a><\/b>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bake the cookies, let them cool, then sandwich with
\n Nutella<\/a><\/b>. I love you, Nutella!<\/i><\/p>\n

The recipe makes about 42 sandwich
\n cookies. I brought a batch to a meeting last week, and they seemed to go
\n over really, really well.\n <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n Heart-Shaped Chocolate Hazelnut Sandwich Cookies<\/b>
\n <\/h2>\n

YIELD: 42 sandwich cookies<\/p>\n

PREP\/ASSEMBLE TIME: 45 minutes<\/p>\n

INACTIVE TIME: 30 minutes<\/p>\n

BAKE TIME: 7 minutes\/batch<\/p>\n

\n These heart-shaped cookies pack a double chocolate hazelnut punch, with
\n the flavors in both the cookies and the filling.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n 2 cups unbleached, all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling surface\n <\/p>\n

1\/2 cup Dutch process cocoa, plus more for rolling surface<\/p>\n

1 teaspoon baking powder<\/p>\n

1\/2 teaspoon kosher salt<\/p>\n

1 cup Imperial Sugar Extra Fine Granulated Sugar<\/p>\n

1 cup unsalted butter, cut into chunks<\/p>\n

1 egg<\/p>\n

1 teaspoon hazelnut flavoring<\/p>\n

1\/2 teaspoon vanilla extract<\/p>\n

chocolate hazelnut spread, like Nutella<\/p>\n

\n Preheat oven to 350. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Whisk flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt together. With an electric
\n mixer, cream the sugar with the butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the
\n egg, flavoring, and extract. In low speed, add flour\/cocoa mixture in
\n three additions. Mix until combined, scraping the sides and bottom of bowl
\n as needed.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Divide the dough into two discs. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for
\n 30-45 minutes.\n <\/p>\n

\n Mix together the additional flour and cocoa to coat rolling surface,
\n rolling pin, and cookie cutter. Working with one disc at a time, roll the
\n dough to 1\/8\u201d thickness. Cut with a 2\u201d heart-shaped cookie cutter. Reroll
\n scraps and continue to cut shapes. Recoat surface and rolling pin with
\n flour\/cocoa mixture as needed.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Place cut-outs on prepared sheets. Freeze on the sheets for 5 minutes
\n before baking.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Bake for 7 minutes. Let sit on the sheets for 2 minutes, then remove to a
\n cooling rack to cool completely.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n When completely cooled, spread 1 level teaspoon of chocolate hazelnut
\n spread onto the bottom of half of the cookies. Place another cookie on top
\n to form a \u201csandwich.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Cookies may be refrigerated to let the filling set up to a firmer
\n consistency.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n [Note: Look for hazelnut flavoring with the extracts. May substitute with
\n vanilla extract.]\n <\/p>\n
