It\u2019s that time of year again, October is Archaeology Month
\nand that means it\u2019s time for the Annual Workshops in Archaeology at The State
\nMuseum of Pennsylvania, this year we are live for the first time since 2019.\u00a0 That\u2019s right, live at The State Museum of
\nPennsylvania on October 29, 2022, so join us as we travel the \u2018Pathways to the
\nPast\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

This year\u2019s presentations will discuss not only the physical
\npaths, portages, and trade routes that traverse Pennsylvania\u2019s mountains and
\nvalleys, but also the less tangible and often hidden paths of the Underground
\nRailroad, a pathway to freedom traveled by many formerly enslaved peoples.\u00a0 Archaeology will be used as a tool to reveal
\nactual paths traveled by indigenous people over thousands of years; and how
\nthose paths developed through time.\u00a0 These
\nPrecontact footpaths and trails evolved into trade routes and eventually into many
\nof the roadways we use today.<\/p>\n

There will also be presentations at the Workshops discussing
\nhow examining these many routes across Pennsylvania have aided in examining
\nsettlement patterns from the Precontact period into the historic period. The untold
\nstories of marginalized people who discovered their heritage through discovery
\nand archaeology are sharing these often-unheard stories and preserving them for
\nfuture generations. By bringing these stories together the process creates a
\ntapestry of Pennsylvania\u2019s collective heritage. <\/p>\n

This program provides an opportunity to engage with scholars
\nwho have researched these pathways, observe the use of lithics often traded
\nalong these routes and to learn about the community preservation efforts of
\nformerly enslaved descendants.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the early registration period
\nhas already closed, but walk-in registration is available at the 3rd<\/sup>
\nStreet entrance The State Museum of Pennsylvania<\/span><\/span><\/a>
\non Saturday beginning at 8:30 am. <\/p>\n

\nHerbstritt, from the Section of Archaeology, will be available during the
\nbreaks for artifact identification.\u00a0 Find

\nNo\u00ebl
\nStrattan and Casey Hanson from the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)
\nwill also be available during the breaks to assist with recording archaeological
\nsites in PA-SHARE.\u00a0Steve Nissly will
\nalso be demonstrating and sharing his knowledge as an expert flint knapper with
\nattendees, as well as displaying examples of his talented craft.<\/p>\n

Immediately following the presentation there will be a panel
\ndiscussion and a participatory question-and-answer session with the
\npresenters.\u00a0 The day will conclude with an
\ninformal reception including light snacks and a chance to socialize with others
\ninterested in Pennsylvania\u2019s past.<\/p>\n
