Canceling flights gradually will<br \/>\navoid stranding aircraft in remote locations without support and allow<br \/>\ncommunication with customers to change their plans before their<br \/>\nscheduled flights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">\u00a0The labor action will negatively impact cargo customers,<br \/>\n including companies utilizing the all-cargo network WestJet launched<br \/>\nbarely one month ago with three Boeing 737-800 converted freighters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">\u201cThe<br \/>\n decision to cancel flights comes as the WestJet Group remains in a<br \/>\nstalemate with the union regarding unreasonable wage expectations that<br \/>\nif realized would permanently damage the financial viability of the<br \/>\ngroup\u2019s future,\u201d the company said in a statement Wednesday night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">\u201cWe<br \/>\n deeply regret the disruption this will have on the travel plans of our<br \/>\nguests and the communities and businesses that rely on our critical air<br \/>\nservice,\u201d said CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech. \u201cWe remain at a critical<br \/>\nimpasse with the union and have been left with no choice but to begin<br \/>\ntaking the painful steps of preparing for the reality of a work<br \/>\nstoppage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">WestJet said it is parking the majority of its Boeing<br \/>\n737 narrow-body and 787 long-haul fleet in a phased approach. Bookings<br \/>\nhave started to decrease because of the uncertainty surrounding future<br \/>\noperations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">More than 1,800 pilots, represented by the Air Line<br \/>\nPilots Association, want to be compensated similarly to their<br \/>\ncounterparts at other North American carriers. WestJet officials say<br \/>\ngiving Canadian pilots U.S.-type compensation is not feasible because of<br \/>\n wide differences in the nations\u2019 economies and that its proposal would<br \/>\nmake its narrow-body crews the highest paid in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Pilots in the U.S. typically make twice as much as those in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">ALPA disputes WestJet\u2019s characterization of industry wages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Air<br \/>\n Canada\u2019s 5,000 pilots officially joined ALPA this week.
