Ever have times when it is
\nhard to put one foot in front of the other and keep forward momentum?<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s a rhetorical
\nquestion – don\u2019t feel the need to answer it.\u00a0
\n<\/span>I think we have ALL experienced that feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n

I had it today, and a couple
\nof chance encounters at the Little Yellow Free Pantry brought a little spring
\nback into my step.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was getting ready to put
\nsome things in the pantry when a woman got out of a parked car next to me.\u00a0 <\/span>I saw she was holding what looked like a
\ncoat, and she seemed to start off walking towards our house.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not gonna lie, I thought, \u201cNoooo!\u00a0 <\/span>We stopped taking donations for Project
\nWarmth over a week ago!\u00a0 <\/span>We do not have
\nSPACE for any more coats!\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But I took a quick
\nbreath.\u00a0 <\/span>I talked to myself (as I so
\noften do) and said, \u201cSusan, stop.\u00a0 <\/span>She is
\ndoing something KIND.\u00a0 <\/span>She is pitching
\nin.\u00a0 <\/span>You know IT TAKES A VILLAGE.\u00a0 <\/span>Smile and accept this donation with grace,\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, I smiled.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHi!\u00a0 <\/span>Is that something for Project Warmth?\u201d I said,
\ngesturing to the front of our house.<\/span><\/p>\n

She looked at me with a blank face…\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis<\/i>?\u00a0 <\/span>Oh, no!\u201d she smiled.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI don\u2019t live around here.\u00a0 <\/span>This is a coat for my friend\u2019s DOG<\/b>!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ahhhhhh\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>Embarrassing!\u00a0
\n<\/span>You see Susan, it is not all about you!\u00a0
\n<\/span>Not everyone who parks on this street is bringing something for one of
\nyour projects.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut, do you live
\nhere?\u00a0 <\/span>Is this your house??\u201d she asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, sure is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She took a step closer to
\nme.\u00a0 She l<\/span>ooked me in the eyes.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an honor<\/i> to
\nmeet you.\u00a0 <\/span>I have sent photos of the things
\nyou do at your home to people around the world, literally, <\/i>around the
\nworld because I am an ex-pat.\u00a0 <\/span>I just love<\/u>
\nwhat you all do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

There.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>A spark.<\/span>\u00a0
\n<\/span>Kind words of encouragement.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Fuel
\nto give me the oomph to keep going.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe warm clothes in front – I love
\nit.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s amazing.\u00a0 <\/span>The sign encouraging people to take things if
\nthey are cold.\u00a0 <\/span>So personable and humane,\u201d
\nshe said.<\/span><\/p>\n

I babbled on about Project
\nWarmth for a couple of minutes, we reminded each other of our names (hers is
\nJules <\/span>\ud83d\ude0a<\/span> ), and off
\nshe went to bring her friend the dog coat.<\/span><\/p>\n

I felt better.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Still had a headache.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still moving in slow gear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still concerned about oh
\nso many things.<\/span><\/p>\n

But I felt better<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Just as I closed the little
\ndoors to the now full pantry, a couple I didn\u2019t know rounded the corner.\u00a0 The woman saw me and got a big grin.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>CAN I HUG YOU<\/i>???\u201d
\nshe asked enthusiastically.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We hugged.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It was nice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am in the same Buy
\nNothing group as you!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I got a table in
\nthere!\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Connection. Community.\u00a0 <\/span>HUGS.<\/span><\/p>\n

I grabbed a drink for her
\nand the person she was with and got them both a little snack from the pantry,
\nthen they continued on their walk.<\/span><\/p>\n

Such simple gestures.\u00a0 <\/span>Taking time to stop<\/i> and talk.\u00a0 <\/span>Being brave enough to ask for a hug<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Simple.\u00a0 <\/span>But grand<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>And oh so appreciated.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Our house this evening.\u00a0 Peace sign from the holidays still up – but peace never gets old, does it?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
