Some references are so nuanced as almost to be missed, and some are sharply pointed in their association.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-ifh27962\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>The book opens with the titular story, <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Rakiya<\/span><\/em><span>, which is a fruit-based, highly alcoholic traditional Bulgarian drink. It is a strong opener, with a gently surprising conclusion that lends the piece the undeniable feel of a parable.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-lhbsb966\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>Immediately, Shuman\u2019s prose impresses with innate confidence and polish. His writing has a timeless quality, which is elegant and sprinkled with precise yet subtle observations and thoughtful interpretations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-g1lb0968\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Mother and Daughter<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is achingly well-observed. Shuman places his characters before the reader without judgment or guidance, yet knowingly develops them and layers their stories to reveal unexpected motives and desires.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-9etqv971\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Volcano<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0changes point of view and occasionally takes on a symbolic, hubristic quality. It\u2019s the first story involving a non-Bulgarian, an Israeli businessman, a character who features in different guises in several of the shorts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-q8acq974\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Cave<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0was atmospherically good if a little tropey.\u00a0 Nonetheless, Shuman is clever to ensure each story offers another aspect of the country, figuratively or literally, and in the case of <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Cave<\/span><\/em><span>, mythically.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-a0g5t979\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Sozopol<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is one of the longer stories and Shuman packs it with ambiguous meanings and literary devices that toy with reader expectations and unsettle preconceptions, like a number of these stories do. \u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Musala<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is a nice little slice of cultural folklore set against the dramatic backdrop of Bulgarian\u2019s mountainous region.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-cmzol984\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>The next two stories, <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Baker<\/span><\/em><span>, and <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Three Women in Sofia<\/span><\/em><span>, are possibly the strongest. Wonderfully realized with characters that step from the page. The twist at the end of the latter story, deftly hiding in plain sight all along.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-jmppi990\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Bear<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0was different in tone, with a simmering aggression and frustration, which mirrored the brothers\u2019 dynamic. <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Lockdown<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0has a feeling of foreboding from the beginning, and so it proves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-jb02q995\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>A couple of the stories might have benefitted from more definitive endings but, nonetheless, Shuman has a knack for intriguing readers with what lies just outside the narrative frame.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-9lxoi997\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>Notwithstanding,<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>\u00a0Forgiveness<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is a powerful piece that delves into Bulgaria\u2019s history and role during WWII, primarily toward Jewish Bulgarians, through an elderly Bulgarian man\u2019s search for atonement from the\u00a0grandson of the friend he wronged so terribly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-lnp3g1001\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>The final offering, <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Train Stops in Plovdiv<\/span><\/em><span>, was the perfect choice to conclude. An upbeat, jaunty little tale that neatly book-ends with the first story and is littered with a selection of individuals and narrative strands from the previous stories.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-bzj571005\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Rakiya: Stories of Bulgaria<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is an engrossingly good collection of stories that captivate and educate.
