Google warns about this in their <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-manager\/serverside\/script-user-guide#disable_app_engine_request_logging_optional\">official documentation<\/a>, and it\u2019s definitely something to keep a keen eye on if your server-side endpoint processes enough data per month.<\/p>\n<p>How much should it process for logging to become an issue? It depends, but you could start seeing some impact once the endpoint processes &gt;1 million incoming requests per month. The best way to find out if logging is a problem is to visit the <strong>Billing<\/strong> dashboard in your server-side tagging Google Cloud project and check what the portion of <strong>Log Volume<\/strong> is in your monthly costs.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 3586 \/ 720;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2021\/02\/logging-cost.jpg\" title=\"Logging cost\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"720\" width=\"3586\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2021\/02\/logging-cost.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Logging cost\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the image above, the endpoint processes around 10-20 million requests per month. Logging isn\u2019t a cost factor until the last 10 days of the month, because App Engine doesn\u2019t charge the project for the first <strong>50 GiB<\/strong> (gibibytes) of logs. In this particular case, logging costs around 12 euros per month, which is 10% of their monthly cost.<\/p>\n<p>Once the property collects more than 100 million hits per month, logs can essentially duplicate the monthly cost, and once you\u2019re collecting even larger amounts of data, the logging costs can bankrupt your company.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll share with you <strong>three<\/strong> tips regarding logging. You should <strong>only<\/strong> filter out request logs if they are a cost for you. Otherwise, let them be logged \u2013\u00a0it\u2019s excellent data for debugging.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tip-1-suppress-all-request-logging\">Tip #1: Suppress all request logging<\/h3>\n<p>The easiest way to get the costs down is to prevent App Engine from logging <strong>anything<\/strong> about the incoming requests. This will essentially take your log expenses <strong>to zero<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The downside is that, well, you lose the log. You won\u2019t be able to view incoming request details, which might be useful for error logging (see below).<\/p>\n<p>To do this, open the <a href=\"https:\/\/console.cloud.google.com\/logs\/router\"><strong>Logs Router<\/strong><\/a> for your Google Cloud project (the one for which your server-side tagging setup is configured).<\/p>\n<p>Click the overflow menu at the end of the row for the bucket named <code>_Default<\/code>, and choose <strong>Edit sink<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2500 \/ 662;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2021\/02\/edit-sink.jpg\" title=\"Edit sink\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"662\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2021\/02\/edit-sink.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Edit sink\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the <strong>Choose logs to include in sink<\/strong> section, edit the <strong>Build inclusion filter<\/strong> text area, and add a new row to the end. In this new row, add the following text:<\/p>\n<p><code>NOT (LOG_ID(\"appengine.googleapis.com\/nginx.request\") OR LOG_ID(\"requests\") OR LOG_ID(\"appengine.googleapis.com\/request_log\"))<\/code><\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1080 \/ 684;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2021\/02\/filter-added.jpg\" title=\"Filter added\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"684\" width=\"1080\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2021\/02\/filter-added.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Filter added\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Then click <strong>DONE<\/strong> and finally the <strong>UPDATE SINK<\/strong> button at the bottom of the view.<\/p>\n<p>The filter prevents the logs for the incoming requests from being stored in your log storage.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tip-2-suppress-all-request-logging-except-errors\">Tip #2: Suppress all request logging except errors<\/h3>\n<p>If you want the logs to still be moderately useful while cutting down on the costs, you can reach an easy compromise: suppress all the request logs except for the errors. This way you can still use the logs for detecting what types of errors the endpoint is throwing while still saving a penny or two by not logging <em>everything<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, follow the steps in the previous tip to open the <strong>Build inclusion filter<\/strong> area for editing. Instead of the filter expression detailed in the previous tip, add the following to a new row:<\/p>\n<p><code>NOT ((LOG_ID(\"appengine.googleapis.com\/nginx.request\") OR LOG_ID(\"requests\") OR LOG_ID(\"appengine.googleapis.com\/request_log\")) AND httpRequest.status <\/code><\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1034 \/ 522;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2021\/02\/all-but-errors.jpg\" title=\"All but errors\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"522\" width=\"1034\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2021\/02\/all-but-errors.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"All but errors\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Click <strong>DONE<\/strong> and then <strong>UPDATE SINK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Now your requests will not be logged unless they returned an HTTP status code of <code>400<\/code> or greater.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Note! It might take a while for the new filter to start working, so don\u2019t be surprised if you keep seeing log entries for the requests for the next minute or so.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 id=\"tip-3-find-console-logs-from-your-production-traffic\">Tip #3: Find console logs from your production traffic<\/h3>\n<p>When in Preview mode, you can easily find the log output from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/custom-templates-guide-for-google-tag-manager\/\">templates<\/a> in your container by looking at the <strong>Console<\/strong> tab.<\/p>\n<p>But where can you view logs for hits that are <em>not<\/em> available in preview mode?<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to run a query in your project\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/console.cloud.google.com\/logs\/query\"><strong>Logs Explorer<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>Query preview<\/strong> field, add the following query:<\/p>\n<p><code>logName =~ \"stdout\"<\/code><\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1712 \/ 736;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2021\/02\/stdout-logs.jpg\" title=\"stdout logs\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"736\" width=\"1712\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2021\/02\/stdout-logs.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"stdout logs\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The template logs are written into a log with the ID <code>stdout<\/code> (short for <em>standard output<\/em>). If your templates utilize the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-manager\/serverside\/api#logtoconsole\"><code>logToConsole<\/code> API<\/a>, the messages logged with the API will appear with this query (even those logged in Preview mode).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>I hope these quick tips have been useful!<\/p>\n<p>If tinkering with the server-side environment is something you\u2019re interested in doing more, I recommend enrolling in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamsimmer.com\/courses\/server-side-tagging\/\">Server-side Tagging In Google Tag Manager course on Simmer<\/a>.
