{"id":72708,"date":"2025-02-07T02:23:28","date_gmt":"2025-02-07T02:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/trumps-immigration-crackdown-harms-us-all\/"},"modified":"2025-02-07T02:23:28","modified_gmt":"2025-02-07T02:23:28","slug":"trumps-immigration-crackdown-harms-us-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=72708","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s Immigration Crackdown Harms Us All"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/progressive.org\/downloads\/21419\/download\/NYChurchSanctuary2022.jpg?cb=2ada233dda9039d027d8be47748c58d0\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"lead\">President Donald Trump said he wanted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/25\/us\/ice-immigrant-deportations-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (deport criminals)\">deport criminals<\/a>, but his policies seem directed at other targets: the Sunday school teacher at my church, the mom I see at the park with her kids, and even my seven-year-old daughter\u2019s classmate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Trump Administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/01\/21\/statement-dhs-spokesperson-directives-expanding-law-enforcement-and-ending-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (rescinded)\">rescinded<\/a> restrictions that previously limited Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from conducting enforcement actions in \u201cprotected areas,\u201d such as schools, churches, and hospitals, in which the Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/01\/21\/statement-dhs-spokesperson-directives-expanding-law-enforcement-and-ending-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (claims)\">claims<\/a> criminals are hiding \u201cto avoid arrest.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This overturns a policy, in place since 2011, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/doclib\/ero-outreach\/pdf\/10029.2-policy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (directing)\">directing<\/a> ICE agents to avoid \u201ccausing significant disruption to the normal operations of [a] sensitive location.\u201d These guidelines were designed to protect access to essential services and prevent unnecessary fear in communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During Trump\u2019s first term, ICE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/25\/us\/ice-immigrant-deportations-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (expanded)\">expanded<\/a> its activities to include courthouses. But in 2021, the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/archive\/news\/2021\/04\/27\/dhs-announces-new-guidance-limit-ice-and-cbp-civil-enforcement-actions-or-near\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (issued)\">issued<\/a> further guidance to limit ICE activity at courthouses to ensure the safety of crime victims and \u201cguarantee equal protection under the law.\u201d The Trump Administration has rolled back these protections.<\/p>\n<p>As a mother, I think of the times I\u2019ve needed to take one of my kids to urgent care or the emergency room. Are undocumented parents who do so now at risk of being permanently separated from their children?<\/p>\n<p>I think of the immigrant families now terrified to send their children to school. Will ICE agents be waiting for them at the school gates? Or the families and individuals I worship with who lack permanent status. Must they now risk arrest just to gather and pray on Sunday?<\/p>\n<p>Living in Florida, I\u2019ve seen firsthand how increased immigration enforcement affects more than just noncitizens. In May 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/committees\/billsummaries\/2023\/html\/3092\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (SB 1718)\">SB 1718<\/a>, which criminalized the transportation of undocumented individuals and required people seeking health care services to provide information about their immigration status.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The law sparked widespread concern within immigrant and noncitizen communities worried about their jobs, access to medical care, and their children\u2019s education. But it also had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usf.edu\/arts-sciences\/centers\/iwrc\/documents\/report-sb-1718-final-nov2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (negative impact)\">negative impact<\/a> on U.S. citizens and, for millions of people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/research\/us-citizen-children-impacted-immigration-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (mixed-status households)\">mixed-status households<\/a>, created fear over the threat of family separation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These policies don\u2019t just affect adults\u2014they leave lasting scars on children who may witness ICE agents taking away a friend at school or see their parents\u2019 fear at the park. How will these children view law enforcement in the future?<\/p>\n<p>So much of our society is built on trust in institutions like churches, schools, and hospitals. Research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/research\/us-citizen-children-impacted-immigration-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (shows)\">shows<\/a> that when this trust erodes, the consequences ripple far beyond immigrant families. Policies that allow random arrests, inspections, and surveillance in spaces that should feel safe threaten to undermine the very fabric of our communities. Must we all live in a heightened state of fear and anxiety?<\/p>\n<p>Many of us who serve our communities feel a deep responsibility to care for both citizens and noncitizens alike. Doctors, teachers, pastors, social workers, and countless others essential to our society now face the unsettling possibility of having to engage with ICE agents while simply doing their jobs. My husband, a pastor who leads our congregation, was stunned when he heard the news. \u201cWhat am I supposed to do?\u201d he asked, baffled and deeply concerned.<\/p>\n<p>These policies are not just about immigration enforcement; they are about reshaping how we live and interact as a society. When fear and suspicion invade spaces that should feel safe\u2014schools, churches, hospitals\u2014they don\u2019t just harm immigrant families. They erode the trust and connection that hold our communities together.<\/p>\n<p>At what cost are we implementing these policies? Are we willing to accept the trauma of children witnessing their parents\u2019 fear or the arrest of a friend at school? A society where neighbors turn on each other, where seeking medical care could mean family separation, or where a pastor wonders if his church is still a sanctuary?<\/p>\n<p>We must demand better. These policies don\u2019t make us safer; they make us more divided. True safety comes from building trust, not tearing it apart. It means ensuring everyone\u2014regardless of immigration status\u2014 an access education and\u00a0health care and worship without fear.
